As a part of its ongoing monsoon preparedness, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) Solid Waste Management (SWM) Department has announced a special cleanliness drive in the city and the suburbs from Friday. The initiative, which will go on till June 15, will focus on the collection of waste, debris, pavement blocks, construction rubble, and other materials discarded at project sites.

The civic body said that special attention will be given to areas around water bodies and drains to ensure that they are not choked during the monsoon season.

Sweeping will be conducted every day before 10 am, with second round of sweeping to be scheduled as needed.

As per the directives of BMC Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani, the initiative will be carried out under the guidance of Additional Municipal Commissioner (City) Dr Ashwini Joshi and Deputy Commissioner (Solid Waste Management) Kiran Dighavkar, along with other special measures to ensure cleanliness during the monsoon season.

In order to maintain cleanliness during the monsoon, the SWM Department will identify high-waste locations in all municipal ward areas and carry out intensive cleaning at these spots.

To ensure a smoother drainage process and prevent debris accumulation, waste materials such as construction rubble, discarded goods, and other rubbish will be cleared from pedestrian paths, roads, and other public spaces.

Waste will also be collected from vacant plots and construction sites, regardless of ownership, except for rubble.

Meanwhile, the BMC has urged residents to maintain cleanliness in their areas and refrain from disposing of waste or construction debris in public spaces. The Mumbai civic body has also called for public cooperation in supporting its cleanliness efforts.

Mumbai: Hindmata floods again as BMC blames 'early monsoon'

The BMC, left red-faced after its monsoon unpreparedness lay exposed on Monday, squarely blamed the weather gods for it. BMC officials revealed that there was a delay in making dewatering pumps operational, and the monsoon “wasn’t expected to arrive this early”. Monday’s downpour left Hindmata and other low-lying areas badly waterlogged. Shopkeepers at Hindmata who escaped major losses, thanks to the bazaar being closed on Mondays, are frustrated by what they call a “chronic and avoidable” problem.
