The Government of Maharashtra on Thursday issued an official corrigendum updating two public holidays for Mumbai and its suburban districts. The amendment modifies an earlier notification of last year.
As per a new circular, Dahi Handi (Gopalkala) and Anant Chaturdashi holidays have been cancelled and replaced by Narali Purnima and Jyeshtha Gauri Visarjan.
The new changes will apply to all state government and semi-government offices in both Mumbai districts.
This also means that schools and colleges across Mumbai will remain closed for students on Friday, August 8, 2025.
Earlier, according to the government circular dated 18 December 2024, holidays were declared on 16 August 2025 for Gopalkala (Dahi Handi) and on 6 September 2025 for Anant Chaturdashi. However, the latest government notification, issued on Thursday, has revised this list.
The new official local holidays for Mumbai are- Narali Purnima (August 8) and Jyeshtha Gauri (September 2) will be observed as public holidays, it said.
BMC announces holiday for its schools and offices on Narali Purnima
Meanwhile, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared a public holiday for all its schools and non-essential offices on Friday in observance of the festival of Narali Poornima.
In an official statement released on Thursday, the civic body stated that the essential services will be excluded from the holiday and will function as normal.
The move comes in alignment with the Maharashtra government's earlier announcement declaring a public holiday for state and semi-government offices in Mumbai for the festival.
“Accordingly, all BMC-run schools and non-essential municipal offices will remain closed on Friday. However, all essential services will continue without disruption,” the statement added.
