A leopard was sighted on Thursday afternoon in the densely populated Pokhran Road No 2 area of Thane, causing panic among residents, news agency PTI reported, quoting officials from the forest department.
The big cat was spotted in a shuttered factory near Bethany Hospital, following which teams from the forest department and Vartak Nagar police station rushed to the site, officials stated.
“We have intensified patrolling in the area and are in the process of setting up camera traps within the factory premises to confirm the presence of the leopard and monitor its movement,” forest department official Narendra Muthe said, according to PTI.
Authorities urged residents to remain vigilant and avoid venturing into isolated areas until the leopard is safely captured or moves away.
Woman mauled to death by leopard in Nainital
A woman was mauled to death by a leopard in the Dhari block of Nainital district on Friday, PTI reported, quoting officials.
The incident took place in Dini Talli Gram Panchayat in the morning when Hema Devi went into the forest to collect fodder for her cattle. A leopard lying in ambush attacked her, officials said.
Villagers said Devi had spotted the leopard earlier and tried to scare it away by shouting and throwing stones, but the animal managed to grab her and drag her into the forest. Her brother-in-law also tried to intervene by throwing stones, but the leopard dragged her further.
Other family members and villagers later searched the forest and recovered her body. Nathuawakhan Forest Range Officer Vijay Bhatt said a team of forest personnel was immediately dispatched to the spot.
The attack created panic among villagers, who also expressed anger towards the forest department.
According to government data, human-wildlife conflict has claimed more than 900 lives in Uttarakhand over the past 25 years, with leopard attacks alone accounting for 548 fatalities.
Leopard, tiger attacks in two villages of UP’s Bahraich district within 24 hours; five injured
Two men were injured after a leopard attacked them on Thursday in a village of Bahraich district, forest officials said.
The incident occurred barely 24 hours after a tiger attack near the Rupaideha border area in the district left three people, including a 10-year-old girl, injured.
Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Ram Singh Yadav told PTI that the leopard was sighted in Chanaini village under the Nawabganj area, close to the India-Nepal border.
“Villagers Nagesh Kashyap (30) and Dheeraj Yadav (50) were trying to flee after spotting the leopard when it attacked them,” the DFO said.
Both men were admitted to the district hospital, where doctors said their condition was out of danger, he added.
On Wednesday morning, a tiger attacked residents of Pachpakri village under the Rupaideha Forest Range, also near the Nepal border, injuring three people, including the 10-year-old girl.
A 60-year-old man was among the injured, and he was referred to Lucknow in a serious condition.
According to the DFO, Sanjana (10) was headed to the fields with her cousin when a tiger emerged from the forest and attacked her. Hearing the girls' screams, villagers rushed to the spot, shouting and carrying sticks, following which the tiger fled.
Villagers said that Radhemohan (60) and Ankit Verma (20), who reached the area after hearing about the attack, were also attacked by the tiger on the way.
All the injured were admitted to the district hospital, Yadav said.
