A three-and-a-half-year-old boy, Vigyan Chavan, who went missing on Friday, was found dead in the water tank of his residential building in Bhiwandi city of Thane district in Maharashtra on Sunday.

The child disappeared from the Kap Talao area, prompting a search by family members and the police, which initially yielded no results, newswire PTI reported.

Authorities began investigating the case as a kidnapping, registering a case against unidentified individuals. On Sunday, residents of the building found Chavan's lifeless body in the water tank and promptly alerted the police.

The incident is now under investigation from various angles.

In another incident, a 20-year-old labourer was crushed to death by a crane at a cable laying site in Navi Mumbai township of Maharashtra, police said on Sunday.

The incident took place at around 11.30 am on Saturday in Kharghar area, they said.

The labourer was pushing a cable drum at the site where digging was underway when he accidentally tripped and fell on the road near a crane.

At that time, a crane operator moved the machine forward, crushing the labourer to death, an official from Kharghar police station said.

The deceased, a resident of Belapur area in Navi Mumbai, has been identified as Sunil Narsima Tangdi.

Based on a complaint by his brother, a case has been registered against the crane operator under Indian Penal Code sections 304A (causing death by negligence), 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life), 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life) and provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, the official said.

The body was sent to a government hospital for post-mortem, the police said, adding a probe was on into the incident.

Meanwhile, police have detained three juveniles and claimed to have solved seven cases of theft of motorcycles in Maharashtra's Palghar district.

Senior police inspector Anil Vibhute said following a number of complaints of motorcycle thefts, a team of the local crime branch was formed to conduct a probe into the cases.

The team on January 24 apprehended three persons, all aged 17, allegedly involved in a recent motorcycle theft in the area.

During interrogation, the three persons told the police about their involvement in other such incidents in Dahanu area here in May and August 2023, the official said.

Further investigation revealed their involvement in motorcycle thefts under Saphala police station limits also, he said.

With this, the police have solved seven cases of motorcycle thefts and one case of stealing of a mobile phone, the official said.

The stolen items have been recovered, the police said. (With inputs from PTI)
