That's what veteran theatre actress Shaukat Azmi has been praying for ever since daughter Shabana landed with a fractured leg. Now, completely healed, the actress will be back on stage this weekend with her play Broken Images

She might have suffered a painful injury but that hasn't caused a dent in Shabana Azmi's theatrical sense of humour. The actress is, however, tired of "broken leg" jokes. Case in point: "When we said break a leg, we didn't really mean it."

Given how committed the actress is to her craft, Shabana essayed the role of Manjula (her character in Broken Images) despite a slip-and-fall on the stairs at her home, on March 7. In fact, it was Shaukatji who insisted that Shabana keep her commitment despite the injury.

"My mother is the matriarch who believes that the show must go on. When the doctor took a look at the leg, he suggested I should rest," recalls Shabana. Even before Shabana could consider his advice, Shaukatji declared, "Yeh toh impossible hai. She will have to go and perform because she has made a commitment." Shabana popped a few painkillers, and suffered an injection before delivering a flawless performance at Bandra's St Andrew's auditorium.

That was two months ago. The act of chivalry made the wound worse, and the actress was advised compulsory bed-rest. Since then, Shaukatji has been feeling terrible about insisting that Shabana perform. "All she kept saying was, 'Allah meri bachchi ko bacha lo!'" says Shabana, in her inimitable theatrical style.
Now, Shabana's leg is healed leaving behind a slight limp that the actress hopes will disappear before her performance on Sunday.
