Municipal corporator Nitin Jagtap threatened to commit suicide yesterday by consuming cyanide unless Commissioner Mahesh Zagade promised to probe 23 cases where building norms had been flouted.

Surprisingly, the police instead of booking Jagtap for attempting suicide merely sent him a notice under CRPC 149, which stated that the police would take action against him if he consumed cyanide.
Yesterday, incidentally, was Democracy Day at the PMC, the first Monday of every month, when citizens are invited to voice their grievances directly to the commissioner.
Jagtap, who is the president of the NGO Anti Corruption Gandhigiri Andolan, pointed to the commissioner that in one such case at Parvati Survey No 61, a private builder had been given a go ahead to construct buildings on a plot that was according to records government land.
In yet another case, Jagtap said, the PMC had passed plans submitted by a builder for construction on a 20-acre plot in Survey No 229 in Viman Nagar that is owned by Subhash Khese, whose permission has not been sought by the builder or the PMC.
Commissioner Mahesh Zagade directed Additional Commissioner Umakant Dangat to look into the matter raised by Jagtap, who, after the commissioner's assurance, gave up his plans to end his life.u00a0
Assuming that the commissioner would not take action, Nitin Jagtap had written a letter to the police on June 1 informing them about his plans to commit cyanide. PI Vasant Sonawane, when contacted said, "We tried to divert him from taking such extreme action, but he would not give us any assurances."
Legal experts told this reporter that the police books citizens who attempt suicide under Section 151 of the IPC, and only releases the person after he or she submits a bond promising that the person would not commit suicide.
PMC Security in-charge Ramesh Shelar said, "Jagtap was not even carrying a bottle of cyanide when he entered the commissioner's hall."
