Yakshagana: Vidyunmati Kalyaana

On: November 15, 3 pm at Prithvi Theatre, Janki Kutir, Juhu. Call: 26149546.
What is it about: Like most Yakshagana performances, this too has its share of twists. Devendra's son Jayanta visits the celestial gardens with angels and falls in love with Vidyunmati, daughter of Gandharva king, Sulochana. The king refuses to let Jayanta marry his daughter, which leads to Jayanta being imprisoned and a battle ensues.
Why should you watch it: Yakshagana is a popular folk tradition from Karnataka and is performed across the state by professionals and amateurs. The actors in this production are volunteers who live near Heggodu Village, who have experimented with the concept in their own way since they aren't "professional actors".
Quote: "Yakshagana is a string of dance and musical pieces, which are sung by the main singer. The song and dance sequences are followed by dialogues by the actors which takes the play forward," says Akshara K V, producer.


Teri Bhi Chup Meri bhi Chup
On: November 15, 7.45 pm at Sophia Hall, Sophia College Campus, Cumballa Hill. Call: 23538550.
What is it about: Mr Khote and Mr Khare are business partners but while one is a philander the other is not so worldly wise. Things come to a head when Mr Khote meddles in his partner's home and business affairs.
Why should you watch it: This play, directed by Dinyar Contractor, comes with a Statutory Warning: Please fasten your seatbelts or you'll find yourself rolling in the aisles with laughter.
Quote: "In past 42 years of my theatre career, I haven't come across actors of the calibre of Ali Asgar and Swapnil Joshi. This play provides pure entertainment that'll drive away your blues," says Contractor.


Gaj Foot Inch
On: November 15, 8 pm at Mysore Auditorium, Bhau Daji Road, Matunga (E). Call: 24024647.
What is it about:u00a0Tillu is forced to take up the family business on his father's insistence. He loses confidence until his fiancu00e9 Jugni comes to his rescue.
Why should you watch it: Well-known writer KP Saxena, who has also written dialogues for films like Lagaan and Swades, has written this play. The humour lies in its subtle play of language and not over-the-top hungama.u00a0
Quote: "Tillu's is a story that most people from business families will relate to. I, too, come from one," says Om Katare, director.


Equus
On: Today, 6 pm and 9.30 pm at Prithvi Theatre, Janki Kutir, Juhu. Call: 26149546.
What is it about: 17-year old Alan Strang, a boy with a strange fascination for horses, a boy who blinds six of these animals in an inexplicable fit. The play turns into part detective story as child psychiatrist, Dr Martin Dysart, tries to understand the cause of the boy's actions.
Why should you watch it: The award-winning play was originally written by Peter Shaffer and has earned cult status. The production is a visual treat with dance, extravagant costumes and spectacular light design.
Quote: "The greatest challenge for me has been to get dancers and actors into the same space since actors can't move as rhythmically as dancers and dancers find it difficult to express themselves like trained actors can," says Vikram Iyengar, director

Oye Band Baj Gaya
On: November 15, 6.30 pm at Tata Theatre, NCPA, Nariman Point. Call: 22824567.
What is it about:u00a0The plotline of this play sounds pretty similar to Monster-in-Law but it also has a dose of suspense. Shakuntala Mehra, a successful businesswoman, is horrified when she finds out that her only son Siddharth has married a simpleton, Suhani. Shakuntala offers Suhani money to leave her son alone but she refuses and then begins the grand battle between enemies borne out of marital vows.
Why should you watch it: The play has TV actors Himani Shivpuri and Moulli Ganguly in the lead roles. The two might not be seen a lot on saas-bahu sagas anymore but they're a treat to watch anyways.
Quote: "It is a play about the saas-bahu relationship but with a twist. It shows how the two characters tackle each other to live happily ever after," says Tushar Joshi, director.
