City gallery Serendip brings art lovers a rare feast with woodcut art by ten artists and a portfolio in association with Trellis Arts' Circle

Art shows in today's day and age are hardly uncommon. Despite being woven around many themes and many media, what is perhaps not so common is the medium of woodcut, a form of relief printing with the use of wooden blocks. Trellis Arts' Circle (TAC), a group dedicated to the diverse forms of printmaking has brought together an exclusive exhibition of woodcuts by ten artists at a city gallery.

Talking about the art in itself, Urmila VG who works as a print maker and is displaying her creations as part of the exhibition says, "Woodcuts are quite similar to linocuts. Wood is first carved, and then an impression with ink is taken.

Wherever you carve remains the white area and the rest of it gets inked," says Urmila. "After which, the process depends on the artist, where additions from previously created blocks can be used and the print can be sent to press", she adds.

The exhibition displays a collection of ten woodcuts, one each by the artists and a collective portfolio that consists of ten works by the artists that was created through a workshop.

"This is the first time we are doing a complete woodcut show. Not many galleries show woodcut art even though it is affordable and quite an interesting medium to deal with", says Ravi Cavale, Owner, Gallerie Serendip. "You need a lot of skill as you first etch with a tool and it then gets translated to paper", he adds.

The works at this exhibition do not revolve around any theme in particular and the ten works that have been displayed bring in individual styles and inspirations of the woodcut artists. As an art and a medium in specific woodcut, Urmila admits is not very popular amongst galleries and is subject to reservations amongst buyers too. "This is perhaps the first exclusive woodcut exhibition I am part of.

Galleries in town are not so open to woodcut and prefer paintings. Also, because woodcuts usually use additions, buyers have their reservations concerning exclusivity", Urmila says.

Eight of the ten artists who are part of this exhibition are Bangalore-based and pursue either printing, sculpture or painting as a form otherwise. The artists have worked as a group for a period of over 15 days to produce a collective portfolio.

This one is surely a rare opportunity for art lovers in town to catch a glimpse of the marvels of printing techniques.
