When an already popular nightspot like the old NYK's on Residency Road revamps itself, it's always a gamble whether devoted regulars will reject or rejoice in the change. So we're quite titillated that Urban Edge has managed to retain the sophisticated, chilled-out atmosphere of its predecessor, while adding a few touches that really make this urban hot spot, a good all-rounder.u00a0

Pool tables and a Nintendo Wii lounge have been added, a karaoke system is on its way, and they've improved the dance floor for a better boogying experience (but sadly no, they obviously cannot do anything about the horrid night life deadlines). With their classy chill-out lounge, separate dance floor, multiple function areas and now entertainment options too, Urban Edge sets itself apart from other bars by being able to offer everything you could want under the one roof. Or under the stars, as the case may be, considering the last item on Urban Edge's impressive list of offerings is an open-air seating and dancing space.u00a0

Urban Edge hosts a different theme night for each day of the week, from Punjabi Wednesdays to electro/salsa Fridays to hip-hip/Persian Sundays. Oh, no need to be alarmed by the combinations. It's not an attempt at some kind of strange musical experimentationu2026 they actually have two dance floors!

Starting next week Urban Edge will be hosting a competition for amateur rock bands every Monday night for the next two months, with the winners receiving Rs 20,000 cash and Rs 20,000 to spend on drinks. Now that would be a big night out!u00a0

And they certainly do encourage you to guzzle your drink. At their "Drink 'Till You Drop" Saturdays unlimited spirits are available for Rs 400 for girls and Rs 700 for guys. Though one wonders how exciting their Tuesday Beer Fest night would be with only three kinds of beer on offer.u00a0

Despite the lack of beer and wine choices, Urban Edge has put together a good list of cocktails, mocktails, warm toddies and flaming and regular shooters. The list even includes a whole section devoted to mint cocktails, such as the 'Pure Cinn' which is given an unusual touch with a dash of cinnamon liqueur. And it's not the only cocktail on the list with a provocative name. From the 'Aphrodisiac' to the 'Screaming Orgasm' to the 'Sperm Shot', flicking through Urban Edge's drinks list almost makes you blush!u00a0

But if you ask me the best thing about this place is the du00e9cor and an airy ambience. With decorative hanging lamps and hookahs to puff away on, Urban Edge has a distinctly Persian feel to it. Add to this soft lighting and some satin bed lounges complete with plump cushions and silky curtains and you've got a cozy romantic corner to spend an evening (need we remind you Valentine's day is round the corner?). Step onto the dance floor with its disco balls and coloured lighting and things get a bit more sleek and sharp.u00a0

The only thing to worry about is whether the arrival of karaoke in their chill-out lounge will ruin the relaxed vibe.
While trying to have an intimate chat with friends over cocktails and a fruit flavoured hookah, I know the last thing I would want is some tone deaf soul blaring out loud 'Hotel California' right next to me. The other thing that management may not have put that much consideration into when planning the new entertainment is that there's only one Nintendo Wii, accommodating two players. So if it gets popular, prepare to queue.u00a0

As for the food, the menu is currently limited to cafu00e9 choices like pizzas, wraps and snacks, but a restaurant menu is coming soon.

Urban Edge specializes in corporate functions and has a variety of spaces for groups of all sizes to choose from. The crowd is mostly corporates, with some college students sprinkled in the mix, but it really depends on the theme night.u00a0

Overall a great place to go with friends, especially if like my group you're constantly divided over whether to go somewhere to chill, to dance or to play. Urban Edge will surely satisfy all.
