Child's play

Besides something as big as the Commonwealth Games that's happening in town, there is still lots more that can lure Dilliwallas thanks to its unique concept. 'Jashne Bachpan', a festival of plays by the children and for the children, is currently taking place in the Capital.

Apart from theatre lovers, this festival is also targeted at the CWg crowd. This is the 10th edition of the festival and this time round, performers from Germany, Bangladesh and Nepal are the special feature.

Chuck what's passive
Happening under Sanskaar Rang Toli of National School of Drama, the sole intention of the festival is to bridge the gap between the passive education system and the active method oflearning.

When Sanskaar Rang Toli was formed in 1989, it initially worked and interacted with various theatre personalities and groups, who were active in practising theatre and drama with and for children across the country. It was then that they hit upon the idea of bringing the major works in children's theatre together on a single platform.

The first ever National Theatre Festival for Children, 'Jashne Bachpan' started in 1998. Since then, it has shaped up as a confluence of children's plays from different parts of the country. Delhi provides these theatre groups active in urban areas with a platform to reveal their urban sensibilities through their works.

A must for juniors
Says Abdul Latif Khatana, chief of the organising committee: "During this span of 10 years that we have been active, we have graduated from that level where we used to get only limited entries. Now we see a lot of awareness among those who work for or with the children's groups." The fact that there is an increasing awareness among people about the benefits of theatre for kids has also helped. The festival gets entries from all around the country.

"It often becomes a difficult task for us to decide on the names as two art pieces cannot be compared. Still, as we all know, it is the idea that matters and that is what we focused on," says Khatana. This time, interestingly, there are entries from not just groups consisting of children but also from groups comprising adults which perform specially designed plays for children.

There are also three international performances. "Through this festival we wish to create a nationwide and international network for various theatre groups from varied backgrounds, who can interact and explore interpersonal exchange primarily by observing different theatrical methodologies and pedagogical aspects," adds Khatana.

The emphasis is on the role of theatre for children where they can work together in a direction to showcase meaningful theatre. This year, the festival received a large number of proposals for participation.
