A court in Mumbai on Monday granted bail to Anant Garje, the personal assistant to Maharashtra Minister Pankaja Munde, who was arrested in connection with the alleged abetment of the suicide of his wife last November, news agency PTI reported. The bail was allowed by Additional Sessions Judge Rupali Pawar, though a detailed reasoned order is yet to be made available. In his plea, Garje argued that the case against him was “based merely on suspicion and assumptions without any substantive facts” and asserted that he was “absolutely innocent” and falsely implicated. Police had opposed the bail, stating that the accused caused physical and mental distress to his wife, 28-year-old wife Dr Gauri Palve, who tragically died by suicide in her Worli flat in Mumbai on November 22, 2025. The incident reportedly followed a domestic dispute, occurring about nine months after their marriage, PTI reported. Palve was employed as a dentist at the civic-run King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital. The case was registered by Worli Police following a complaint by Palve’s father under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including abetment of suicide, criminal intimidation, and voluntarily causing hurt, among others, leading to Garje’s arrest on November 24, 2025. Palve’s family had alleged that she took the extreme step due to alleged torture and harassment by her husband. In his bail plea filed through advocate Mangesh Deshmukh, Garje stated that the allegations were vague and lacked substantive evidence. He contended that the first information report (FIR) was a result of afterthought and emotional distress following the tragic incident, and that it did not disclose any direct, specific, or proximate act of abetment or cruelty attributable to him that could constitute an offence under BNS. Victim’s family alleges accused had extramarital affair Police, however, claimed that on the day of her death, Garje threatened to die by suicide to hide his own mistakes and recorded a voice clip, which he allegedly sent to his wife. Fearing that he would tarnish her social image by sending the clip to others, Palve was reportedly driven to end her life, PTI reported. The victim’s family alleged that Garje had an extramarital affair, and Palve had discovered him chatting with another woman on his mobile phone. Police added that Garje frequently quarreled with his wife over trivial matters, rarely gave her time, and behaved rudely. The prosecution had described the case as highly sensitive, noting the suicide of a female doctor and the serious nature of the allegations. Despite these claims, the court granted bail to Garje, allowing him temporary relief while the investigation and trial proceed. (With PTI inputs)
23 February,2026 08:02 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentThe Congress on Thursday claimed that nine of its videos created using artificial intelligence (AI) were “forcefully deleted” by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) governments at the Centre and in various states. The party said the move was a “blatant misuse” of blocking rules and called for more transparency from the government. At a press conference, Congress social media department head Supriya Shrinate accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP-ruled state governments of curbing dissent. She claimed the deleted AI videos all carried proper disclaimers indicating they were AI-generated and were not meant to mislead anyone. Shrinate said, “Throughout the entire duration of the videos, 'AI-generated video' is prominently displayed at the top, which clearly proves that there was no attempt to mislead or deceive anyone,” as per PTI reports. According to her, deletion orders came from both state authorities in Bihar, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra, as well as the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology under Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. Criticism of AI management and national policy Shrinate criticised the Modi government’s handling of AI initiatives, citing the controversy over Galgotias University displaying a Chinese-made robotic dog at the India AI Impact Summit as its own innovation. She argued this reflects broader issues of imitation over innovation. “Imitation is not innovation, but does the government care? Modi ji, no matter what you say, your legacy is that private university which has brought us global shame,” she said. She also claimed that instead of deleting AI videos and curbing dissent, the Prime Minister should focus on national interests, farmers’ rights, and governance issues. The Congress leader called the video deletions a misuse of the IT Rules, 2021, noting that there is no public explanation for the take downs. “This is how authoritarian regimes work — by giving orders to social media platforms to take down or block content arbitrarily in complete secrecy,” Shrinate said, stressing that citizens deserve clarity on what was illegal in the videos. The party also questioned if political satire and commentary using AI would be treated the same way, warning that such censorship undermines democratic freedoms. (With PTI Inputs)
23 February,2026 06:56 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentThe Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Monday unveiled India’s first National Counter-Terrorism Policy and Strategy, titled ‘PRAHAAR’, marking a significant step in the country’s efforts to combat terrorism in all its forms. The comprehensive policy establishes a structured national framework to address evolving security threats, including cross-border terrorism, drone-based attacks, cyber-enabled risks and organised terror networks, news agency IANS reported. The eight-page document, made publicly available on the MHA website, formalises a unified and institutionalised approach to counter-terror operations that India has followed over the years amid increasingly complex threats. Reiterating the government’s zero-tolerance stance, the policy states that terrorism cannot be justified under any pretext and rejects attempts to link terror with any religion, ethnicity, nationality or civilisation, IANS reported. It also emphasises support for victims and strict adherence to human rights and the rule of law. The strategy adopts a multi-layered approach focusing on prevention, swift and proportionate response, enhanced inter-agency coordination and accountability through established legal and judicial processes. The term ‘PRAHAAR’, meaning “strike”, represents seven core pillars: prevention of terrorist attacks; swift and proportionate response; capacity-building across security and intelligence agencies; ensuring human rights-compliant operations; addressing conditions conducive to radicalisation; strengthening international cooperation; and promoting societal resilience and recovery, IANS reported. Policy flags cross-border terror, drone, and cyber threats The threat assessment section highlights persistent and emerging challenges to India’s security architecture. Cross-border terrorism remains a major concern, with extremist groups attempting to activate sleeper cells and incite violence. Global outfits such as Al-Qaeda and ISIS are cited as continuing efforts to influence or inspire attacks. The document also flags the growing use of advanced technologies by terror handlers, including drones in sensitive regions such as Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir. It notes increasing convergence between terror networks and organised crime groups that facilitate logistics, recruitment and financing. Digital platforms have become key enablers for terrorist activities, enabling anonymous communication through social media, encrypted messaging applications, dark web platforms and cryptocurrencies for propaganda, recruitment and operational coordination. The policy also raises concerns over attempts to access chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, explosive and cyber capabilities, along with rising cyber intrusions by non-state actors and hostile entities. Prevention remains central to the framework, with emphasis on intelligence-led operations and coordinated surveillance. Institutions such as the Multi-Agency Centre and the Joint Task Force on Intelligence will serve as core nodes for real-time intelligence sharing and threat assessment. Security agencies are tasked with dismantling terror support ecosystems, including overground worker networks, illegal arms supply chains and terror financing channels. Border management will be strengthened through advanced surveillance and detection technologies across land, maritime and aerial domains. Focus on infrastructure security and rapid response Critical infrastructure — including power plants, railways, aviation networks, ports, defence installations, space assets and atomic energy facilities — will receive enhanced protection. Under the response mechanism, local police will act as first responders, supported by specialised state counter-terror units and elite national forces such as the National Security Guard for major operations. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) will lead investigations into terror-related offences, focusing on effective prosecution and high conviction rates. The policy also calls for modernisation of equipment, training and infrastructure, standardisation of counter-terror mechanisms across states and bridging operational gaps. Addressing radicalisation, the framework outlines community engagement initiatives, outreach through civil society and religious leaders, youth programmes, prison monitoring and socio-economic interventions aimed at reducing vulnerability. At the international level, India will strengthen intelligence-sharing arrangements, pursue extradition of terror suspects and continue efforts at the United Nations to designate terrorist entities and deny safe havens. Described by officials as a dynamic and forward-looking framework, ‘PRAHAAR’ adopts a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach to dismantle terror ecosystems, safeguard national security and enhance long-term resilience. 23 February,2026 06:49 PM IST | New Delhi | mid-day online correspondentThe Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a writ petition filed by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy challenging Andhra Pradesh’s constitution of a one-man committee to recommend suitable departmental action against erring officials in the case relating to the supply of allegedly adulterated ghee for Tirumala laddus. A Bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant observed that the administrative inquiry ordered by the state government and the top court-directed investigation by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) operate in distinct spheres and can continue simultaneously. The writ petition alleged that the one-man committee interfered with the SIT investigation earlier ordered by the apex court in relation to allegations of adulteration of ghee used in the preparation of prasadam laddus at the Tirupati temple. Dismissing the plea, the CJI Kant-led bench observed that the top court’s only concern was to ensure that there was no overlap between the two processes. “In our opinion, the administrative inquiry cannot be overlapping with the probe directed by this court,” the Bench, also comprising Justice Joymalya Bagchi, observed, adding that it was satisfied that the petitioner lacked a foundational basis to seek interference. In its order, the Supreme Court directed that both processes should continue strictly in accordance with the law. During the hearing, senior advocate Sidharth Luthra, appearing for the Andhra Pradesh government, submitted that the petition was filed with “complete malice” only to derail departmental proceedings. The decision to constitute a committee to identify the masterminds behind the alleged adulteration of Tirupati temple laddu was taken in the state Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on February 3. As per a government order (GO) issued by the Andhra Pradesh government, retired IAS officer Dinesh Kumar has been tasked with examining the Self-Contained Note (SCN) submitted by the SIT and recommending initiation of action against committee members and senior officials of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) for lapses, omissions and failures in relaxation as well as enforcement of ghee tender conditions. Asking the committee to submit its report within 45 days, the state government’s GO sets out the terms of reference, under which the committee will assess administrative lapses, examine whether decisions were taken with due diligence and procedural compliance, identify administrative responsibility of officials and recommend appropriate disciplinary or administrative action, confining its examination strictly to governance and administrative aspects. The Supreme Court, on October 4, 2024, had entrusted the investigation of the alleged adulteration of Tirupati laddus to an independent SIT under the supervision of the Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). After completion of the investigation, the CBI-led SIT filed its final charge sheet before an Anti-Corruption Bureau court in Nellore on January 23, 2026 and submitted the SCN recommending administrative action against certain officials. The charge sheet cited findings of the ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal, which analysed four sealed ghee samples drawn by TTD from tankers supplied in July 2024. The laboratory report found no presence of lard or animal fat in the samples. However, investigators concluded that the ghee was adulterated with a cocktail of vegetable oils and laboratory esters designed to chemically mimic dairy parameters. Meanwhile, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has registered an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act to probe alleged financial irregularities linked to the adulteration case. The ED initiated the investigation on the basis of chargesheets filed by the CBI-led SIT. Sources indicated allegations of hawala-based transactions, with private dairy firms and intermediaries allegedly routing bribes through hawala channels to influence TTD officials responsible for ghee tenders and quality clearances. The agency will examine the money trail and the role of the alleged hawala network. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. 23 February,2026 04:44 PM IST | New Delhi | IANSFour people died in the last 48 hours after allegedly consuming adulterated milk supplied by an unauthorised vendor in East Godavari district, police said on Monday. While two persons died on Sunday, two others died here today. "Four persons died over the past two days after consuming adulterated milk supplied by an unauthorised vendor in the city," Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Rajamahendravaram North Zone Y Srikanth told PTI. Preliminary investigation suggests that the contaminated milk caused kidney (renal) failure leading to sudden urinary blockage and death, he said. All four victims procured milk from the same local vendor who supplied it to households in Rajamahendravaram. The vendor sourced milk from nearly 40 cattle and local farmers before distributing it to households, the DSP added. Food Safety officials collected milk samples and dispatched them to various laboratories for testing, while multiple teams conducted field inspections and medical surveillance in neighbourhoods. Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu held a review meeting on Monday following the deaths reported in Rajamahendravaram. District officials briefed him on medical assistance being provided and arrangements, including field-level camps and rapid test medical camps in affected localities, said an official release. The Chief Minister instructed officials to ensure the best medical care to those undergoing treatment. Officials informed Naidu that milk was supplied to 106 households and samples were collected from 75 people. The CM ordered strict action against vendors. 23 February,2026 04:03 PM IST | Rajamahendravaram (Andhra Pradesh) | PTIUN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday cited AI fragmentation risks, calling for global interoperability standards for better outcomes at the ‘India AI Impact Summit 2026’ here. Guterres said that today, international cooperation is difficult. “Technological rivalry is growing. Without a common baseline, fragmentation wins, with different regions and different countries operating under incompatible policies and technical standards,” he warned. Addressing the Summit, he said that when we agree on how to test systems and measure risk, we create interoperability. “So a startup in New Delhi can scale globally with confidence because the benchmarks are shared and safety can travel with technology,” he noted. Guterres also called for science-led AI guardrails to protect people and accelerate innovation. “Once we understand what AI systems can do and what they cannot, we can move from rough measures to smarter, risk-based guardrails. Guardrails that protect people, uphold human rights, and preserve human agency,” he told the gathering. According to the UN Secretary-General, AI guardrails must build confidence and give business clarity so innovation can move faster in the right direction. “Science-led governance is not a brake on progress. It is an accelerator for solutions. It helps us identify where AI can do the most good and the fastest, and it helps us anticipate early impacts from risks for children to labour markets to manipulation at scale, so countries can prepare, protect, and invest in people,” he highlighted. AI innovation is outpacing our collective ability to fully understand it -- let alone govern it. If we want AI to serve humanity, policy cannot be built on guesswork, hype, or disinformation. We need facts we can trust and share across countries and sectors, he stressed. According to him, AI must be accessible to everyone. “But without investment, many countries will be logged out of the AI age. That’s why I am calling for a Global Fund on AI -- to build skills, data, affordable computing power and inclusive ecosystems everywhere,” he added. 23 February,2026 02:49 PM IST | New Delhi | IANSLeader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, appeared before an MP-MLA court in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, on Friday to record his statement in a 2018 defamation case. The case relates to remarks he allegedly made about Union Home Minister Amit Shah during the Karnataka Elections in 2018. The court has scheduled the next hearing for March 9, when Gandhi is expected to provide evidence in his defence, his advocate Kashi Prasad Shukla told PTI. Gandhi entered the court at around 10.40 am and left by 11.15 am. After the hearing, he left for Lucknow before flying back to Delhi. Heavy security arrangements were put in place at the civil court premises. A dog squad conducted a thorough search of the complex to prevent any untoward incident. A large police contingent, including an Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) and four Circle Officers (COs), was deployed to maintain order, news agency IANS reported. Ahead of the court appearance, local Congress leaders put up posters in Sultanpur reading “Satyamev Jayate (truth always triumphs)". Gandhi was accompanied by senior Congress leaders, including Rajya Sabha MP Pramod Tiwari, MLA Aradhana Mishra, and UP Congress chief Ajay Rai. Speaking to ANI, Tiwari criticised the BJP, saying, “The BJP is continuously filing false and fabricated cases against him across the entire country. Similarly, a case has been filed in Sultanpur. We have faith in the judiciary; we will get justice. He is coming today to appear in that very matter.” Aradhana Mishra added, “Rahul Gandhi will today attend the hearing in Sultanpur for the case currently underway in the court there. All workers are with him.” Background of the case The case was filed in 2018 by local BJP leader Vijay Mishra, alleging that Gandhi made derogatory remarks about then-BJP president Amit Shah. Gandhi previously recorded his statement in July 2024, claiming that he was innocent and calling the case a political conspiracy. Following Friday’s hearing, the court has directed the complainant to produce evidence in the case. (With PTI, IANS, and ANI Inputs)
23 February,2026 02:48 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentBorder Security Force (BSF) personnel on Monday arrested Apollo Chakma, an alleged armed cadre of the Parbotto Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (PCJSS) headed by Santu Larma, chairman of the Chittagong Hill Tracts Regional Council. Chakma, a resident of Panchari in Khagrachari district of Bangladesh, was apprehended while attempting to cross the Indo-Bangladesh border through Gate No 2 of Amrit Para BSF camp in Dhalai district of Tripura. During the operation, BSF recovered a walkie-talkie set from his possession. He was handed over to Rashyabari Police Station. The police have registered a case against him under multiple charges, including cow smuggling and illegal entry into India. The PCJSS faction led by Larma has been described as a terrorist organisation by the Guwahati High Court in its judgment dated September 5, 2024, in the case of National Investigation Agency vs Rohmingliana, which pertained to arms smuggling by PCJSS cadres. The outfit is alleged to have transformed into an Indo-Bangladesh border smuggling syndicate and stands accused of involvement in trafficking of arms, drugs, Indian cows, and Burmese cigarettes. Large-scale public protests against PCJSS took place in south Tripura in July–August 2025 over its purported role in drug trafficking and negatively influencing the youth of the region. Under the interim government of Bangladesh, PCJSS is said to have associated with anti-India elements. With funds for the Chittagong Hill Tracts Regional Council reportedly withheld, the group has allegedly grown desperate, leading to a rise in cross-border criminal activities by its cadres. 77 Bangladeshi infiltrators identified in Odisha; 73 deported: CM Majhi The Odisha government has deported 73 of the 77 Bangladeshi infiltrators residing illegally across the state, Chief Minister (CM) Mohan Charan Majhi informed the Assembly on Monday. 23 February,2026 02:36 PM IST | Agartala | mid-day online correspondentSales of luxury homes, costing Rs 10 crore and more, in Gurugram rose 80 per cent last year to Rs 24,120 crore on higher volumes coupled with price rise, according to a report. Real estate consultant India Sotheby's International Realty (ISIR) and data analytics firm CRE Matrix on Monday released a report on Gurugram's primary (first sale) luxury housing market and highlighted that the IT city, located in Delhi-NCR, has beaten Mumbai in sales of homes priced Rs 10 crore and above in value terms. Mumbai saw sales of homes worth Rs 21,902 crore in this price category. As per the data, the sales of luxury homes, prices Rs 10 crore and above, jumped nearly 3 times to 1,494 units in Gurugram during the last calendar year from 519 units in the preceding year. In value terms, the sales increased to Rs 24,120 crore last year from Rs 13,384 crore in 2024. "While Mumbai has traditionally held the crown for being the most expensive real estate market, Gurugram in Delhi-NCR, outpaced Mumbai in total sales value for luxury homes priced at Rs 10 crore and above during 2025," the report said. Tina Talwar, Area Director, India Sotheby's International Realty, said, "What is particularly notable is that this growth is no longer confined to legacy addresses. Emerging micro-markets such as Dwarka Expressway, Golf Course Road, and Golf Course Extension Road are collectively driving a structural expansion supported by infrastructure upgrades, superior product launches, and enhanced connectivity." Abhishek Kiran Gupta, Co-founder and CEO of CRE Matrix said the nearly ten-fold growth in the luxury segment over the past two years underscores sustained buyer confidence, strong capital inflows, and the expanding base of high-net-worth individuals.
