Firecrackers dealers are divided in their opinion on whether to approach the police to extend the deadline for bursting of crackers.

While some are happy with the 10 pm deadline and want to stick to it, others might follow their counterparts in Mumbai, who have asked for an extension of deadline to burst crackers.

Most dealers admit that if Mumbai gets an extension, they will approach the corporation and the government to extend the deadline in the city as well.

Chandrakant Baban Amrale, president, Sarasbaug Fire-Cracker Dealers Association, said: "Now, we are busy as our licences have not yet been sanctioned by the corporation. If the Mumbai association has approached the state, we will also do the same."

Harish Jalan of Jalan Crackers said: "We will definitely ask for an extension as crackers are used once a year. It will boost our business but ultimately the decision has to be taken along with other dealers."

Devgar DP, another wholesaler, said though they would not apply for an extension, it all depended on the police.

Most dealers said the police in the city were lenient and did not take strict action and so it did not matter. Shirish Sonawane, a member of the association, said: "Police do not take any action against those who burst crackers after 10 pm. Most people here burst crackers beyond 11 pm, so it's not a issue and we are happy with the deadline."

But the police said the state government would take a call. Additional Commissioner of Police (Administration) Sanjeev Singhal said: "Dealers who do not have yearly licence have to apply for it a month before Diwali and they can do business for 20 days.u00a0u00a0u00a0u00a0
