He's tapping your phone

If you've ever experienced the utter frustration of losing that perfect conversation with a loved one to the invisible miasma of the Internet, you'll love CallGraph. A free Skype recording tool that records and preserves that precious conversation, it's also a boon for journalists and academicians.

Let's face it. Who wants to sit and transcribe an hour-long conversation over a crackly phone line to ferret out some precious nuggets of information? You don't have to worry about that anymore, because CallGraph will do that for you too. And the man behind it all, Rajiv Poddar, founder of CGBiz LLC, the company behind CallGraph.Biz, has a bunch of exciting plans to add to that in the new year.

"Tools to record phone conversations, dictation and interviews, including iPhone and Android apps and a conference call recording service," he says, rattling off a list in response to a question about what's coming up in 2011.

This, for a service that is already one of the most popular applications on Skype. There have been more than 150,000 downloads of CallGraph Skype Recorder till date, more than 1,500 hours of audio have been transcribed, and 700 registered transcribers clock about 100 hours of audio transcription per month.

How does it work? "The Skype recorder can be used to record your phone conversations in MP3 and WAV format. If you want a transcript of audio files, then you can upload the file to our website and order a transcript.

This service is useful for researchers, journalists and writers who conduct interviews over the phone researching for articles, studies etc. We convert the audio file to a text document and save users time and effort," Poddar explains.

"It takes around four to six hours of manual effort to transcribe one hour of audio," he says, "We charge $45 (Rs 2,025) for 1 hour of audio transcribed (75 cents or Rs 33 per minute). We split the file into smaller parts and distribute it amongst our transcribers. Each part is transcribed and reviewed by different people.

Once all the parts are done, we prepare the final transcript by combining it all into a single file and do a final proofreading. This process enables us to measure the progress of the transcript, check for quality at each step, be consistent and handle high workload without compromising on quality."

In 2011, the company plans to relaunch and reposition itself as a transcription outsourcing service. "We will change our focus to audio transcription outsourcing. You can outsource your audio transcription work to hundreds of transcribers worldwide and get high quality transcripts of your files. Freelancers and transcriptionists can register with us and get paid to transcribe our files," says Poddar.

And the icing on the cake? Following a huge demand for the Mac OS X version of CallGraph Skype Recorder, they plan to release a Mac version as soon as the 2011 relaunch is done.
