Cops will provide security to gangster-turned-bizman Rakesh Malli as per a High Court directive

Malli, who was earlier part of the Muthappa Rai gang, formed his own gang after Rai was caught by the Central Crime Branch eight years back. He started operating from Bantwal Taluk of Mangalore district and had 10 cases against him, including cases of extortion and attempt to murder.

"However, Malli managed to get all the cases cleared and claimed he had been reformed. He was elected president of the Mangalore District Transport Association recently and is also heading INTUC," said a senior police officer.

While asking the Mangalore police for security, Malli cited an incident wherein the Bangalore Central Crime Branch officials nabbed a supari killer recently, who confessed to have taken a contract to kill him.

Don in danger?
Malli claimed that there have been many such attempts on his life in the recent past. He said the district police had given him security a few years back, which was withdrawn soon after due to his alleged role in criminal activities.

The Mangalore police turned down his request stating that Malli was a rowdy-sheeter himself. Malli later approached the HC where the Superintendent of Police Subramanyeshwara Rao submitted to the bench that they had decided not to give Malli security considering his criminal antecedent.

However, the division bench directed the police to provide a paid constable to Malli on an experimental basis. "If the threat persists, the security can be reviewed after two months," the bench said.

When MiD DAY contacted Rao, he said, "We are bound to provide him security and we will see to it that he does not misuse it."
