Blame it on the lighting, but the minute we stepped inside the air-conditioned section of Brewer's Cafe in Andheri, we felt like flies trapped in those ultraviolet light traps.

It didn't help that Eight Legged Freaks was playing on the TV screen in front of us. Not a terrific start to a late-night coffee session.
While we know it's bad manners to eavesdrop we couldn't help but overhear the animated conversation the couple at a neighbouring table were having with a man we would later discover was one of the partners of the establishment.
We were handed a well-worn menu that listed the usual coffee shop food choices: coffees, shakes, slushes, sandwiches, pastas and deserts, apart from sundaes.

We ordered a Cheesy Aloo Tikki Sandwich (Rs 46), the Brewer's Frappe (Rs 56), a Lemon 'N' Mint Slush (Rs 45), and the Chopped Chicken Pasta (Rs 96).
The sandwich was tasty, but unexceptional and the coffee, no less than the Brewer's Special, was served less than ice cold.

The lemon slush was a reassuring blue, but not as strong as we hoped it to be. The pasta? Well, let's just say, vegetarians wouldn't be disappointed.
The plot thickens
The furniture reminded us of one of those oily Bollywood producers' homes with leather sofas and plastic orange plants, except that here in place of leather they had rexine: red and black rexine.
So, here's the deal: Is this a place you'd want to stop by with a friend to catch up over coffee? If you live in the neighbourhood probably. Is this a place you will remember for the food? No.

There are far too many choices that taste better and are cheaper. Are you going to spend hours just hanging out at this place for the ambience? Not unless you're a fan of Jeff Goldblum's earlier work (think: The Fly).

Brewer's Cafe needs to take its food far more seriously, focus on the details (ketchup and mustard in tiny bowls without teaspoons just won't cut it), hire an interior designer, and re-think their lighting design.

Because when you choose to go down the beaten path, you're going to need to work that much harder at proving your mettle, particularly in a city like Mumbai.
