3-yr-old boy hit by pvt bus dies on the spot; mob takes law into own hands

An angry mob stoned a private bus in Nigdi after it knocked down a three-year-old child near Ajantha Nagar on Monday. The child died on the spot.

Aditya Vilas Gaikwad, the child who died, was a resident of Ajantha Nagar. The police said he was with his mother, and they were on their way back home in the morning after dropping Aditya's elder sister.

Crossing the road
"Around 9.30 am, they had almost reached home and were just waiting to cross the road when a company bus took a turn at the Ajantha Nagar corner and knocked down Aditya as he was crossing the road with this mother," an official of the Nigdi police station said. "Aditya received serious injuries and died on the spot."

The police arrested the bus driver, Babasaheb Namdev Yede (35), a resident of More Vasti in Chikhli.
The situation was tense as residents refused to let Aditya's body be taken away from the spot for post-mortem. Additional police forces had to be called in to get the situation under control.

"We got a call about a large mob gathering on the road near Ajantha Nagar after the accident. The irate mob had pelted stones at the bus. A team of 15 policemen, including two officers from the Nigdi police station, reached the spot within a few minutes and brought the situation under control," Police Inspector Sharad Ugale said. "Some windowpanes were found broken, but the mob had dispersed by the time we reached the spot."

Ugale added that the bus involved in the accident was operating on contract basis. He said no case had been registered against those who damaged the vehicle.

"The owner of the bus hasn't approached the police yet, so no case has been registered against the stone-pelters," he said.
