Rajesh Kumar escapes with his life; his vehicle is crushed to a pulp

Chatting on the job leads to losing precious time, but it can also save your life. Who knows it better than 37-year-old Rajesh Kumar.

Turtle: A train at a Delhi Metro construction site near Aali village on
Mathura Road keeled over and landed on top of an auto. Though the
vehilce was crushed, the driver of the auto escaped miraculously.
The DMRC has ordered a probe while the police have not registered an

The auto driver had a miraculous escape when a crane being used in Metro construction work keeled over and landed on top of his vehicle, reducing it to a mangled heap. Kumar got away with an injured arm since he was sitting on the edge of the driver's seat, talking to a colleague.

An employee of the contractor IDEB too was injured in the incident. Both the victims were admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences(AIIMS).

A spokesperson for the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said the incident occurred around 4.10 pm on the under-construction corridor between the Mohan Cooperative Estate and Tughlakabad stations. "The Hydra (a small capacity crane) was standing within the barricaded area and was involved in lifting iron rods at this site when it toppled and its boom hit an auto rickshaw standing outside the barricaded area," said Delhi Metro spokesperson, Anuj Dayal.

"The body of the auto was completely crushed. Had the driver been inside the auto, he would have certainly died in the mishap," a police official said. The DMRC has initiated a probe into the incident. "The cause of toppling of the Hydra is not certain and a committee headed by the Chief Project Manager (South East) has been constituted to investigate the incident," said Dayal.

On the other hand, police told MiD DAY late on Wednesday night that they were looking into the incident but an FIR had not been registered yet. "It could be a case of negligent use of machinery. We are probing the matter, and an FIR will be registered after initial investigations," said a senior Delhi police official.
