IS the value of human life a mere Rs 50?

That's the amount over which a 21-year-old labourer from Uttar Pradesh was killed by three men in Chikhali on the fringes of the city on Saturday night.

Money lost:
The three labourers are looking for a lost currency note of
Rs 50 when they notice Ravindra Chowbey loitering around nearby

The deceased, Ravindra Chowbey, was identified with the help of his cellphone SIM card found near his body.
The Dehu Road police on Monday arrested the three accused for murder. All three are labourers hailing from Dungriganj of Siddharthnagar in Uttar Pradesh. They have been identified as Dhamalu Gautam (46), Tulsiram Gautam (19) and Rajkumar Gautam (20).

Attacked: Suspecting him of having stolen the money, they beat him
with an iron rod

"On Saturday night, the three friends were Chikhali-Jadhavwadi road. They were looking around for a Rs 50 note which they had lost," said Police Sub-Inspector Somnath Jadhav. "They happened to spot Chowbey moving about suspiciously around the place and suspected that he had stolen the money. They assaulted him with an iron rod and belt."

Nabbed: Just as the labourers are about to flee for their hometown,
they are nabbed

The police were alerted by a security guard, Ganpat Shinde, who witnessed the incident and also filed the FIR.

SIM helps identify
Although the murder took place on Saturday, the police identified the body yesterday. "We activated the SIM which threw up a few numbers and helped us establish Chowbey's identity only yesterday," said Jadhav.
"On Monday, the three accused were preparing to flee to their hometown in Uttar Pradesh when Shinde tipped us off," said Police Inspector Nitinkumar Gokave. "We set up a dragnet at KSB chowk in Pimpri and nabbed them."

The Wadgaon Maval court has remanded them in police custody till Thursday.
"After we activated Chowbey's SIM card, we got a mobile number of one Bhaiji from Delhi. When we called him up, he helped us identify Chowbey," said PSI Jadhav. "Besides, a relative of Chowbey has also confirmed the identity."
