LAUGH, FOR A SOCIAL CAUSE

It deals with three people who meet unexpectedly one dark night at the edge of the sea front. There is Sudipto Bandhopadhya (Bandy), an existentialist intellectual who has sunk so low that honest existentialists would disown him. He has no future except to jump off into the sea and is about to do so, when Pankaj Chopra (Chops) comes along and intervenes.
Chops and Bandy turn out to be college classmates. As Bandy, in his rags, reveals the depth of his despair, Chops is a picture of prosperity, and is all sympathy and then confesses that he too is full of frustration, because his wife won't divorce him so he can marry the woman he loves. Into this, Chops' wife Amu appears, a beautiful and highly educated woman, and a triangle of the absurd ensues.

KEEP IT SHORT
HOW about spending the weekends watching back to back movies? Keep it short and sweet this weekend. Watch screenings of films dealing with a host of subjects, cutting across genres. On the plate are movies like Hiroshima, In Search of My Home, The Face and Ribbons for Peace among others.
Directed by Paul Wilmshurst and George Anton, this movie deals with the dropping of the first atomic bomb over Hiroshima. The attack proved to be the defining moment of the 20th century.u00a0
In Search of my Home, a short film by Sushmit Ghosh and Rintu Thomas, tells the story of humans with lost homes and forgotten names. In Search of My Home is a journey with a Burmese and an Afghan family, and explores the complexities in their everyday battle for survival.
The Face is another short movie by Amar Kanwar (all of nine minutes). Here you see the unique image of the most brutal dictator in the world -- General Than Shwe of the Burmese Military. The Face also remembers Win Ma Oo and Thet Win Aung and the sacrifices of the students of Burma in their
movement for freedom. The movie is a tribute to the democracy movement in Burma and a criticism of India's support to the Burmese military.
Ribbons for Peace (shorter at four minutes) by Anand Patwardhan is an anti-nuclear music video which reworks an old film song by Kishore Kumar. Had-Anhad: Journeys with Ram and Kabir by Shabnam Virmani is longer at 102 minutes and deals with the life of mystic poet and saint Kabir. Kabir defied the boundaries between Hinduism and Islam. He had a Muslim name and upbringing, but his
poetry repeatedly invokes the widely revered Hindu name for Godu00a0-- Ram. This film journeys through song and poem into the politics of religion and finds a myriad answers on both sides of the hostile border between India and Pakistan.
1876-An Entertainment by Anasuya Vaidya (29 minutes) deals with the Dramatic Performances Act of 1876. Nineteen years after the first Indian War of Independence, the colonial British Government in India passed a law to suppress and control theatre. The Act gave powers to a government representative to ban plays and dole out severe punishments to the playwright, actors, theatre owners and audience for attending or getting associated with such plays. Freedom of Flight, by Raghav Khanna (four minutes), is about a child's dream to fly kites.
At: Kriti, S-35, Tara Apartments, Alaknanda
When: August 20 and 21
Timings: 12.30 pm to 5.30 pm
Ring: 26027845/ 26033088
