Saurabh and Gaurav Luthra, owners of North Goa’s Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub, are expected to arrive in Delhi from Thailand on Tuesday, according to the Goa Police, reported the IANS. The brothers will be taken into custody by the Goa Police immediately upon their arrival in the national capital. They were detained by Thai authorities on the basis of an INTERPOL Blue Corner Notice issued at the request of Indian law enforcement agencies. After being produced before a Delhi court, the Goa Police will seek a transit remand to bring them to Goa for further investigation into the deadly fire incident. Investigation expands to government departments As part of the ongoing probe, the police are recording statements from officials of the excise department. Statements of individuals associated with the local panchayat body are also being examined. Investigators stated that several important and concrete pieces of information have emerged during the inquiry. Sources added that the magisterial inquiry committee constituted to investigate the incident has also questioned Pradeep Ghadi Amonkar, the original owner of the land on which the nightclub was built, according to the IANS. Magisterial inquiry summons over 100 people The officials said that the committee has summoned more than 100 individuals to participate in the investigation so far, with statements of at least 20 people already recorded. Delhi Court rejects anticipatory bail pleas Earlier on Thursday, a Delhi court rejected the anticipatory bail applications filed by Saurabh and Gaurav Luthra after considering the response submitted by the Goa Police. During the hearing, Goa Police counsel Abhinav Mukherjee argued that the brothers had falsely claimed minimal involvement in the business and had asserted that their foreign travel was pre-planned. Documents contradict brothers’ claims The police presented several documents before the court to refute these claims, including an FSSAI application filed by Saurabh Luthra, a Pollution Control Board application, and GST records listing both brothers and Ajay Gupta as partners in the business, as per the IANS. The prosecution also informed the court that the nightclub’s panchayat licence had expired and was never renewed, and that the establishment was operating without valid permission. A licence agreement was produced to show that the brothers lacked authorisation to run the venue. Police allege attempt to evade arrest The prosecution contended that the brothers booked their flight at around 1.15 a.m., shortly after the fire broke out, and departed for Thailand at 5 a.m. on December 7, terming the move an attempt to evade arrest, the news agency reported. Investigators said the brothers left the country almost immediately after the fire incident, which killed 25 people in the early hours of December 7. Deadly Blaze had claimed 25 lives The massive blaze, which swept through the nightclub near the Arpora River backwaters, claimed 25 lives, including four tourists and 14 staff members. Police officials said the club’s narrow entry and exit points were a major factor that prevented many victims from escaping in time. The fire broke out in the early hours of December 7 at the club located in the busy Baga area, which attracts large crowds due to its proximity to one of Goa’s most popular beaches. The bill seeks to repeal the MGNREGA of 2005 and establish a rural development framework aligned with the national vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 by providing a statutory guarantee of 125 days of wage employment in every financial year to every rural household whose adult members volunteer to undertake unskilled manual work. Congress MP Saptagiri Ulaka, who chairs the Parliamentary Standing Committee of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, said, “The panel made several recommendations, including that for increasing the number of workdays and wages under the MGNREG scheme." "It wasn't that cold yesterday, but today it's very cold, and there's a lot of fog also...cold conditions in Dholpur are deteriorating," a resident told ANI. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Dholpur recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 184 in the morning, placing it in the 'moderate' category. While this suggested relatively better air quality compared to some other regions, the overall pollution levels still reflected a decline. Meanwhile, Jaisalmer recorded a 'severe' AQI of 307 and was shrouded in thick smog, which severely reduced visibility and caused discomfort among residents. Several other cities in Rajasthan also experienced varied air quality levels. Jaipur, the state capital, reported a 'moderate' AQI ranging between 101 and 200, while Sri Ganganagar recorded a 'poor' AQI of 236. The incident took place early Friday, local time, a family member said on Monday. The victims were identified as 27-year-old Gurdeep Singh from Barre village and 19-year-old Ranvir Singh from Uddat Saidewala village. Gurdeep had gone to Canada over two years ago and was awaiting a work permit approval. Ranvir had left India one and a half years ago to pursue studies. They were shot moments after they got into a car after leaving a birthday party. Ranvir Singh was sitting in the driver's seat, with Gurdeep Singh beside him. A few others sat in the back. The assailants came in a car and sped away after firing shots, Ranvir's uncle, Mandeep Singh, said. A bullet struck Ranvir while Gurdeep appeared to have been hit by shrapnel. Mandeep Singh, who lives in his village in Mansa, said the family suspects that the two were victims of mistaken identity, as the car belonged to someone else. "Ranvir never had any enmity or even a minor fight ever with anyone," he said. "What we have gathered so far is that it was likely a case of mistaken identity "Ranvir had gone with a friend to a birthday party in Edmonton," he added. Ranvir, the son of a farmer, was the only child of his parents, and has many of his family members settled in Canada. "He was intelligent and good at studies. The alleged land-for-job scam involves Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav, his family members, and other accused. Special Judge (Prevention of Corruption Act) Vishal Gogne of the Rouse Avenue Courts deferred the hearing on the framing of charges till December 19 after the probe agency sought more time to file verification reports of all accused persons, reported IANS. It has also been reported that the Delhi court is examining whether charges are to be framed under Sections 120B, 420, 467, 468, and 471 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), along with provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. However, in an earlier hearing held on December 11, the court had also deferred the matter and granted the CBI additional time to file verification reports. The CBI in the court highlighted that “large-scale corruption occurred between 2004 and 2009 when Lalu Prasad was the Union Railway Minister.” Investigation agencies further alleged that parcels of land were acquired in the names of Lalu’s family members and a company linked to them, often at rates below market value and largely through cash transactions. The agency further asserted that, “In return, jobs in Group ‘D’ posts across various railway zones were allegedly provided to those who transferred the land,” as cited by news agency IANS. While the Union Home Ministry has already granted sanction to the CBI to prosecute Lalu Prasad in the corruption case, both the ED and the CBI continue to conduct parallel investigations into the alleged Rs 600-crore money-laundering trail linked to land transfers in Patna. It was hearing a PIL seeking directions to the Centre to provide support and refunds to passengers affected by the cancellation of hundreds of flights by IndiGo. On Monday, a bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pamcholi took note of the submissions of petitioner Narendra Mishra that the plea needed a hearing at the top court and said the high court is already seized of another similar PIL, reported PTI. The bench asked Mishra to approach the high court and granted him the liberty to come again if grievances are not addressed. Earlier, the bench refused to accord an urgent hearing to the plea seeking judicial intervention in the matter. It said the Centre has taken note of the situation and has taken steps to address it. The incident occurred at Bhaisadon village under Balumath Police Station limits on Sunday night when Aryan Lohra went outside his home to relieve himself, he said. "A herd of 10-12 elephants was passing through the area on Sunday night when he was out to relieve himself. The man could not see the approaching elephants due to the darkness and was trampled by them," Balumath forest ranger Nand Kumar Mehta said. He said the deceased's family was given an immediate relief of Rs 40,000, and the rest of the compensation will be provided after some official procedures. In Jharkhand, Rs 4 lakh compensation is provided in case of death due to an elephant attack. Mehta added that the body has been handed over to the Balumath Police Station for post-mortem examination. The villagers expressed anger over the incident. They demanded that the forest department drive the herds of elephants away from the village and find a permanent solution to prevent such incidents.
