Several states in India has been witnessing a rise in Covid-19 cases.
According to the health ministry, as of 4 June 2025, India has reported 4,302 active Covid-19 cases, with 864 new cases recorded in the last 24 hours. Most infections are mild and being treated at home. Since the beginning of the year, 44 deaths have been reported, mainly among people with existing health conditions.
An official statement said that a series of technical review meetings were held on June 2 and June 3, led by Dr Sunita Sharma, Director General of Health Services (DGHS). Representatives from the Disaster Management Cell, Emergency Management Response (EMR) Cell, National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), and central government hospitals in Delhi participated. State and Union Territories (UTs) officials also joined the meetings, it said.
The Union Health Ministry has reviewed the current Covid-19 situation in the country and assessed public health preparedness with all States and Union Territories (UTs). This comes after a recent rise in Covid-19 cases reported across India.
"The states have been asked to ensure the availability of oxygen supplies, isolation beds, ventilators, and essential medicines. A nationwide drill to check oxygen systems like PSA plants and LMO tanks was held on June 2. More facility-level preparedness drills are planned for June 4 and June 5," the statement said.
It said that surveillance teams are keeping a close watch on cases of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI). All hospitalised SARI patients and 5 per cent of ILI cases will be tested for Covid-19.
Samples from positive SARI cases will undergo genome sequencing to track virus variants, it said.
