The government has approved an expenditure of Rs 676 crore, which includes Rs 512.5 crore for providing 25 lakh deposit-free connections at the rate of Rs 2,050 per connection
The total number of PMUY connections will rise to 10.58 crore, the ministry said in a statement, Representational Pic/File
The Centre on Monday approved the release of 25 lakh additional LPG connections under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) for the current financial year.
"With this expansion, the total number of PMUY connections will rise to 10.58 crore," the ministry said in a statement, reported the PTI.
For this, the government has approved an expenditure of Rs 676 crore, which includes Rs 512.5 crore for providing 25 lakh deposit-free connections at the rate of Rs 2,050 per connection, Rs 160 crore for targeted subsidy of Rs 300 per 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder (for up to nine refills per year, proportionately pro-rated for 5 kg cylinders), and Rs 3.5 crore towards project management and other expenses.
To fund this expansion, the government has approved a budget of Rs 676 crore, which includes -- Rs 512.5 crore for 25 lakh deposit-free connections (at Rs 2,050 each), Rs 160 crore for a Rs 300 targeted subsidy per 14.2 kg cylinder (for up to nine refills a year), Rs 3.5 crore for project management and related expenses, according to the PTI.
Each eligible woman under PMUY receives a free LPG connection, which includes, cylinder security deposit, regulator, safety hose, gas consumer booklet (DGCC), installation charges, first refill and stove -- all free of cost.
The connection can be either a 14.2 kg cylinder, 5 kg single, or 5 kg double bottle setup, depending on preference.
According to the PTI, to make the process more efficient, the application system is now fully digital. Women from poor households without an existing LPG connection can apply using a simplified KYC form and a Deprivation Declaration. Applications can be made online or at any public sector LPG distributor.
Each application goes through system checks and a physical verification before the LPG is installed at the applicant’s home.
Launched in May 2016, PMUY originally aimed to provide 8 crore free LPG connections, which was achieved in 2019. Since then, further expansions under Ujjwala 2.0 brought the total to over 10.33 crore connections as of July 2025, making it one of the largest clean energy initiatives in the world, as per the PTI.
Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri called the move a tribute to women ahead of Navratri.
He said, “This decision reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to empowering women and honouring them like Goddess Durga. Ujjwala continues to improve health, safety, and dignity in millions of homes.”
