Residents hail new mode of public transport. Over 12,000 footfalls registered on day one

It was all emotion and passion as the clock struck 8 on Monday morning and the first Metro train started off its journey to the Millennium city -- Gurgaon. By 8 pm the ten stations on the Qutub Minar-HUDA city centre station had registered over 12,000 footfalls, sending the Metro coffers ringing with Rs 2.45 lakh.

Setting aside the convention, a station controller flagged off the first train to Gurgaon, as no politicians were invited for the ceremony.

"I am feeling heavenly today. No more pollution, no more traffic, I am very happy. I can reach office in time and safely. We were eagerly waiting for this day," said Sameer, a resident of Dhaula Kuan who works in Gurgaon.
Jayant, a student of Amity school, said: "These memories will remain forever etched in our minds. We had waited for long for Metro connectivity between Delhi and Gurgaon. It will not only decrease the travel time but will also help in reduction of accidents and pollution."

With the initial hiccups, the operations ran delayed but it failed to dampen the spirit of enthusiastic travelers with most of them joyriders. "In spite of the delays, I am feeling good traveling through Metro. At least I am safe from the torrid heat of 45 degrees outside," said Mohammed Zameer Ansari.

Saurabh Kumar, a student Sri Ram Public School said, "Commuting between Delhi and Gurgaon was a big headache. Though it came a bit late but finally we have got Metro connectivity. Government should expand the network within Gurgaon and introduce faster feeder bus services."

Sabotage?

The inaugural journey between Delhi and Gurgaon was also not that smooth for Delhi Metro. Officials found that signaling system was not working when they reached the Qutub Minar Metro station in the morning to run the initial tests. On inspection, they found that the cable wire of signaling system has been stolen between Qutub Minar and Sultanpur Metro station.
Due to the cable theft, operations remained affected on the network throughout the day. Trains between Qutub Minar and Sultanpur Metro station were run on manual mode.
