A tragic road accident in Baramati on Sunday morning claimed the lives of a 37-year-old man and his two young daughters after they were run over by a speeding dumper truck at Mahatma Phule Chowk in Khandoba Nagar.
The victims, identified as Onkar Acharya and his daughters, 10-year-old Saee and 4-year-old Madhura, were returning home from the market around 11:30 am when the incident occurred, according to officials from the Baramati City Police, according to the news agency ANI.
A case has been registered at Baramati Police Station, and the dumper driver has been arrested for causing death by negligence.
According to the Police, "The incident took place around 11:30 AM, when Father Omkar was returning home with his daughters on a motorcycle. As they were turning towards Khandoba Nagar at Mahatma Phule Chowk, a dumper truck, allegedly driven recklessly and at high speed by Dashrath Dattatray Dole (50), attempted to overtake the motorcycle. In the process, the truck's rear wheel reportedly struck the two-wheeler, resulting in fatal injuries to all three family members," as per the news agency ANI.
The police official added that the complaint was filed by Amol Rajendra Acharya, the brother of the deceased Onkar Acharya. In his statement, Amol alleged that the dumper truck driver showed blatant disregard for road conditions, traffic regulations, and public safety. A CCTV clip capturing the horrific incident has since gone viral on social media, further fuelling public outrage.
The Baramati police have booked the accused driver under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 281, 106(1), 125(a), 125(b), and 324(4), as well as relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, including Section 184, as per ANI.
An investigation into the case is currently underway

In a similar tragic incident, a 43-year-old traffic constable, Ganesh Patil, was tragically crushed to death by a hydra crane at Mahape MIDC on Thursday while on duty. The incident occurred around 12.30 pm when Patil was managing routine vehicular flow along the industrial route.
According to police, the crane driver allegedly failed to notice the constable while taking a sharp right turn. The massive vehicle hit and ran over Patil, who sustained severe injuries. Eyewitnesses said the driver appeared unaware of the officer's presence. By the time help arrived and Patil was rushed to Vashi Municipal Hospital, doctors declared him dead.
