Shiv Sena (UBT) President Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday urged farmers in Maharashtra to withhold votes from the ruling Mahayuti coalition until their crop loans are waived. Speaking at Bhusani village in Latur’s Ausa tehsil, hit hard by recent floods, Thackeray assured farmers, “I am here to give you courage. I stand firmly with you.”
He demanded the BJP-led government provide Rs 50,000 per hectare as compensation for damaged crops. “Until the government fulfils its commitment, every farmer should refuse to vote for Mahayuti candidates,” he said.
Taking a dig at Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Thackeray criticised him for campaigning in Bihar while local farmers face severe losses. He recalled that Fadnavis, as leader of opposition in the assembly, had previously called for declaring a ‘wet drought’ under similar circumstances.
Thackeray also addressed women beneficiaries of the Ladki Bahin scheme, urging them to demand Rs 2,100 instead of the current Rs 1,500 monthly allowance, news agency PTI reported.
At Thorlewadi in Ahmedpur tehsil, he added, “No one listened to farmers, so I have come here to hear you out. When I was chief minister, Marathwada faced disasters, yet I fulfilled my duty sincerely.”
The former CM also alleged corruption in the current administration, claiming government funds favour contractors and outsiders while sidelining loyal BJP workers. Criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Thackeray said promises to double farmers’ income remain unfulfilled as input costs have doubled.
Referring to Bihar, he questioned why direct cash transfers to women were limited to that state, suggesting, “If the prime minister is for the entire country, he should deposit Rs 10,000 into women’s accounts from Kashmir to Kanyakumari.”
Maharashtra farmers yet to receive any help from state despite its 'biggest' relief package claim: Uddhav
Thackeray on Thursday targeted the Maharashtra government over the farm loan waiver issue, alleging that distressed farmers were yet to receive any financial aid despite the government’s claim of announcing the “biggest” relief package.
He interacted with farmers at Karajkheda village in Dharashiv district on the second day of his four-day tour of the Marathwada region, aimed at assessing the hardships faced by cultivators following the heavy rains and floods during the monsoon season.
He is scheduled to visit Bhusni and Thorlewadi villages in Latur and Pardi in Nanded later in the day.
Last month, the Devendra Fadnavis-led government announced a Rs 31,628-crore relief package for farmers whose crops were damaged across 68.7 lakh hectares in 29 districts during the August–September deluge. The Chief Minister had described it as an “unprecedented effort” by the state to stand by farmers in their time of crisis.
