The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Pune district today (Sunday), warning of extremely heavy rainfall in the ghats and surrounding areas over the next three hours. Citizens have been advised to remain alert and take necessary precautions.
According to information from the state ministry in Mumbai, isolated locations in the Pune ghat region are likely to experience intense downpours. The administration has urged residents, particularly those in low-lying areas, to stay cautious.
Meanwhile, several dams in the Pune district have reported rising water levels due to continuous rainfall.
Mulshi dam discharge increased
The Tata Power management at Mulshi Dam announced that the reservoir is currently filled to 99.58 per cent of its capacity. As a result, the discharge into the Mula River is being increased from 3,320 cusecs to 7,000 cusecs starting from 12:00 noon. Officials stated that further changes in discharge will depend on rainfall intensity and inflow conditions.
Authorities have strictly appealed to citizens not to enter riverbeds and to immediately shift any livestock or belongings from riverbanks to safer areas.
Other dam discharges
As of 10:30 a.m. today, significant discharges were reported from several major reservoirs:
Dimbhe – 29,980 cusecs
Chaskaman – 20,810 cusecs
Bhama Askhed – 13,312 cusecs
Khadakwasla – 6,864 cusecs
Ujani – 41,600 cusecs
At river monitoring points, the following discharge levels were recorded:
Bund Garden – 13,116 cusecs
Daund – 12,253 cusecs
Nira Narsingpur – 94,919 cusecs
Pandharpur (Bhima River) – 90,123 cusecs
Pavana dam on high alert
The Khadakwasla Irrigation Division confirmed that Pavana Dam has reached 100 per cent storage. Currently, 1,400 cusecs are being released into the river, and the discharge is scheduled to be increased to 2,880 cusecs by 10:30 a.m. today. Officials cautioned that, depending on rainfall in the catchment area, discharge levels may be raised or reduced in stages.
The Flood Control Cell of Pavana Dam has urged citizens living along the riverbank to take maximum precaution and extend full cooperation to the Water Resources Department and the district administration.
The Pune district administration has appealed to residents to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel in ghat areas, and follow all safety advisories issued by the disaster management authorities.
