THE Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway near Pune’s Navale bridge saw another accident on Monday afternoon, with four to five vehicles colliding on the steep stretch. A few passengers suffered minor injuries, and traffic was restored quickly after police reached the spot.
The crash comes soon after the November 13 incident on the same bridge, where a speeding trailer rammed multiple vehicles and a private car caught fire, killing eight passengers trapped inside.
Preliminary information suggests Monday’s vehicles were travelling downhill when a driver lost control, causing a chain collision. Eyewitnesses said a container truck was speeding before it hit a pickup ahead. No major injuries were reported.
A senior police inspector from Sinhagad police station said traffic slowed briefly and confirmed that the container driver lost control before ramming the pickup. The matter is under investigation.
The Navale Bridge stretch has seen frequent crashes in recent years. Traffic Police records note over 200 major accidents between 2021 and 2025, including 95 serious cases, with around 100 deaths on this route in the past four years.
Experts cite the steep slope, ineffective railings, poor visibility and inadequate speed-control measures as recurring concerns. Residents and commuters continue to urge authorities for long-term safety solutions.
