Amid rising political tensions over allegations of electoral fraud, NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) MLA Rohit Pawar on Friday remarked that the public perception of the Election Commission (EC) is deteriorating, with many now viewing it as closely aligned with the BJP, reported ANI.
"With proof, Rahul Gandhi highlighted a lot of things about the Election Commission yesterday, and people are now thinking that the Election Commission is an extended department of the BJP," Pawar told reporters.
Pawar further stated that widespread concerns were raised regarding the credibility of the election process following the outcome of the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly Elections, reported ANI.
He went on to claim that even some of the winning candidates appeared to be taken aback by the results, hinting at unexpected outcomes.
"We saw how people were celebrating during the results of the Lok Sabha elections, while no one came out during the Maharashtra Assembly elections. Those who were elected were also surprised. Somewhere, many people had raised objections to the election process. This was in people's minds," he added.
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, reinforced his allegation of “vote theft,” asserting that justice would eventually be served to those responsible for the alleged electoral malpractice, reported ANI.
"Vote theft is not just an electoral scam; it is a major betrayal committed against the Constitution and democracy. Let the nation's culprits hear this - times will change, punishment will surely be meted out," Rahul Gandhi said in a post on X.
Earlier, Gandhi had claimed that 1,00,250 fake votes were fabricated in the Mahadevapura Assembly segment, located within the Bangalore Central Lok Sabha seat, allegedly to secure a BJP victory.
As reported by ANI, at a press conference held at the Congress headquarters in Delhi, Gandhi presented what he described as proof of fraudulent electoral practices. He accused the Election Commission of collaborating with the BJP, which, he said, played a key role in Prime Minister Narendra Modi securing his third term in office.
"Narendra Modi became Prime Minister with just a margin of 25 seats...Election Commission is helping BJP destroy the electoral system in India...The Election Commission is not giving us the data because of what we did in Mahadevpur (Karnataka Assembly constituency); if we do it in other Lok Sabha seats, then the truth about our democracy will come out. This is the evidence, criminal evidence (pointing to the physical voter list)," Rahul Gandhi said.
Gandhi also accused the Election Commission of attempting to erase critical proof, citing a directive that mandates the preservation of CCTV and webcast footage from polling stations for only 45 days after the electoral process, unless legally challenged.
Responding to Gandhi’s claims regarding voter roll tampering in Karnataka, the state’s Chief Electoral Officer has asked him to submit documented evidence under oath, reported ANI.
Likewise, on his allegations of voter fraud in the recent Maharashtra Assembly elections, the state’s Chief Electoral Officer has requested a sworn affidavit from Gandhi along with specific details and proof of voter list manipulation.
