Maharashtra Governor C P Radhakrishnan demitted office on Thursday due to his election as the country's next Vice-President, a statement issued by the President's office said, reported the PTI.
President Droupadi Murmu appointed Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat to discharge functions of the Governor of Maharashtra, in addition to his own duties, it said.
At the time of his nomination as the vice-presidential candidate by the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), Radhakrishnan was serving as the Governor of Maharashtra.
Radhakrishnan, the 67-year-old NDA nominee, won the vice-presidential election on Tuesday defeating the joint opposition nominee B Sudershan Reddy by a margin of 152 votes.
The election was necessitated by the sudden resignation of earlier Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21.
"Consequent upon demitting the office of Governor of Maharashtra by C P Radhakrishnan due to his election as the Vice-President of India, the President of India has appointed Acharya Devvrat, Governor of Gujarat, to discharge the functions of the Governor of Maharashtra, in addition to his own duties," the communique said, according to the PTI.
Radhakrishnan is likely to be administered the oath of office by President Droupadi Murmu on Friday, officials said.
The president is expected to administer the oath of office to Radhakrishnan at a formal ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on September 12, they said.
NDA candidate Radhakrishnan had on Tuesday won the Vice President election after winning 452 vote.
Opposition nominee B Sudershan Reddy got 300 votes, the returning officer had earlier aid.
"Total 767 votes were cast in Vice Presidential polls, 752 were valid and 15 were invalid," Returning Officer PC Mody had earlier said.
Rooted in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan has been elected as the 15th Vice President of India, becoming the third leader from Tamil Nadu to assume this prestigious position.
A two-term Lok Sabha MP from Coimbatore during the tenure of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Radhakrishnan narrowly missed an opportunity to become a Union Minister in 1998. Due to confusion over his name, the position was instead given to fellow Tamil politician Pon Radhakrishnan, following a mix-up by BJP floor managers at the time.
Radhakrishnan’s political journey began in his teenage years when he joined the RSS, steadily rising through its ranks and later gaining recognition within the BJP both at the state and national levels.
