    Mumbai rains: Wall collapses in Thane, kills one

    A 35-year-old man was killed and two other persons were seriously injured when the compound wall of a housing society collapsed amid heavy rains in the city, an official said today. The 30-ft long compound wall of the society, located in Patlipada area on the city's Ghodbunder Road, collapsed on houses situated in the vicinity around midnight yesterday, Thane Municipal Corporation's Regional Disaster Management Cell chief Santosh Kadam said. One person, identified as Prakash Sakharam Wavale, died on the spot, he said. A 29-year-old woman and a 10-year-old boy sustained serious injuries and were admitted to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa, he said. Four houses located next to the compound wall suffered damages, Kadam said, adding that five houses near the mishap site were evacuated. As a precautionary measure, the remaining portion of the compound wall, which could pose a danger to people living in the vicinity, was demolished by the civic and fire brigade personnel, he said.

    Part of bridge collapses in Andheri West

    Part of a Road Over Bridge (ROB) collapsed in Mumbai's Andheri West during early morning hours on Tuesday, injuring two people in the incident. The Gokhale bridge, that connects Andheri East and Andheri West, collapsed on the tracks near Andheri Station.

    Four fire tenders have been rushed to the spot as it is feared that some people might be trapped under the debris.  Even, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team has reached the spot. 

    According to Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) department, "Some people are feared trapped inside. We are at the spot and trying to check with the locals if someone is missing as they might be trapped under the debris". The bridge collapse has affected train services. 

    All services of Harbour railway line are affected between Andheri railway station & Bandra railway station, however, the services between Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CSMT) & Bandra railway station are running normally.  Further details are awaited.

    Meanwhile, the stoppage of the Western Railway suburban services have paralysed the city. Prashant Ghag, who works in media house at Fort said, "When I reached Borivili to board a Churchgate bound train, I came to know that all the lines of Western Railway have come to halt. Therefore, finding no alternate means of commute in such a rainy season, I had to return at my home."

    An official from Disaster Management Unit said that fire brigade jawans and other agencies have been mobilised to clear the debris."Around 7.30 am, the part of East Western Railway FOB fell down towards Andheri east station. Fire brigade, Mumbai police and ward staff have rushed to the spot," said the official adding no casualty was reported so far. He also said that it seems that incessant rain caused cracks in the FOB, which later resulted in the collapse. Thankfully, no train was passing beneath the track," he added.

    Train Services on Western Railway

    Train services of the Western Railway in Mumbai came to a halt after a part of a footover bridge (FOB) collapsed this morning, an official said. No casualties were immediately reported. Overhead Equipment (OHE) have been damaged and a team of engineers have swung into action to restore it, chief PRO of Western Railway Ravinder Bhakar told PTI. "A part of the FOB has collapsed which resulted the halt in all our up and down services of Western Railway. Our officers have reached to the spot and accessing the situation," he said.

    Part Of Andheri Bridge Collapses, Train Services Suspended

    A part of the bridge collapsed in Andheri west at 7.30 am. According to sources, services for slow and fast trains have been suspended. It's part of Gokhale bridge that connects Andheri east Andheri west. 4 fire brigade vehicles have been rushed to the spot. The Mumbai fire brigade is trying to check if someone is missing or trapped under debris. More details awaited.
