If we can introduce marine conservation programmes at the school level, the importance of protecting environmental resources will get ingrained in the young minds from an early age. Environmental Studies curriculum in schools is confined to terrestrial and forests, while marine ecology has been ignored.

It's a concern because Mumbai is a coastal city. We've begun this initiative with a few International Baccalaur ufffdat schools here; these programmes include on-field research, snorkelling and scuba diving in the Andaman Islands.

So far, these experimental programmes have introduced the kids to coral reefs, mangroves and tropical forests and have fetched a terrific response.
