The plan to restore Mumbai’s 800-year-old Mahim Fort has regained momentum, following the inscription of 12 forts in Maharashtra on UNESCO’s World Heritage List last month. Our report stated that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) decided to revisit its plan to develop a heritage circuit in the Mahim area for tourists.
The proposed heritage circuit will connect three key heritage landmarks located in close proximity: the Mahim Fort, St Michael’s Church and the Mahim Dargah, along with the Mahim beach. The goal is to create a recreational and cultural asset in Mahim, explained our report and cited an official stating that tourists, when on a visit to Mahim Fort, can easily spend three to four hours exploring the vicinity, since the area will offer a rich heritage experience. An official has also been quoted as saying that there is a common belief that historic monuments are mostly located in south Mumbai’s Fort area. Yet, Mahim alone has at least two
major heritage sites.
This is an important point, and it is time we start highlighting heritage across the city. Even if officials put up a small signboard explaining the historic import of a place or structure, that would be valuable. Cleaning up heritage structures and ensuring public access, while putting in place rules, are also necessary. People also need to respect heritage spaces. Fort facelifts and maintenance has been a simmering problem for years. We need an overarching look at all forts and finish the cleaning up, and thereby improve accessibility to these. As Mumbai is witnessing a redevelopment boom, make citizens aware that this city has fascinating historical landmarks, too. A balance between old and new, awareness of our past as we go on into the future is an exciting way to understand the city better.
