Turkey, Russia agree to share information on downed jet

Ankara: Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu called his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday over a downed fighter jet, a Turkish official told Xinhua.

Cavusoglu informed Lavrov that Turkish F-16 jets shot down a Russian Su-24 warplane on Tuesday, claiming airspace violation by the plane.

Both parties agreed to share information with regard to the incident through diplomatic and military channels, and meet in upcoming days, according to the official.

Lavrov was due to visit Turkey on Tuesday for bilateral talks, but cancelled it over the incident.

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said on Wednesday that Turkey does not aim to escalate tension with Russia, and both parties should take note of this.

"Russia is our friend, our neighbour. Our bilateral communication channels are still open," he said at the parliament.

"It was not an incident that Turkey desired," Davutoglu added.
