Article 370 Verdict: Farooq Abdullah clarifies on “Let J&K go to hell” remark

After Farooq Abdullah’s ‘Let J&K go to hell’ remark sparked furore, the National Conference chief issued a clarification. While talking to ANI, Farooq said, “We will not stand with any another country, but at least respect us, try to win our hearts. This is why I used these words. I am clarifying”. A day after the Supreme Court upheld the abrogation of Article 370, National Conference Chief and former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah on December 12 said on the Article 370 Verdict, “Let Jammu and Kashmir go to hell. They (Government) made Jammu and Kashmir a hell.” In a landmark move, the Supreme Court Constitution Bench unanimously upheld the abrogation of Article 370 of J&K on Dec 11. The Apex Court has directed ECI to conduct elections to the Legislative Assembly of J&K by Sept 2024. PM Modi in a tweet, welcomed the verdict terming it historic, a beacon of hope and a promise of a brighter future.

Home Minister Amit Shah welcomed the SC’s verdict and said, “It proves, Govt’s decision was constitutional”. Union Home Minister Amit Shah presented the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill, 2019 in both houses. Notably, Supreme Court asked the Election Commission to hold J&K Assembly elections by Sept 2024. On August 5, 2019, the Central Government announced the revocation of the special status of J&K granted under Article 370.

The wreath-laying ceremony of slain head constable Ghulam Mohd Dar who succumbed to his injuries after being fired by terrorists was held in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla on October 31. Kashmir police said that injured police personnel, a resident of Wailoo Kralpora was killed by terrorists outside his house. The wreath-laying ceremony was attended by senior police officials and locals.  Following the incident, security officials cordoned off the area and started a search operation.
