Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Shehbaz Sharif was sworn in as the 24th prime minister of Pakistan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the newly elected Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on March 05. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on March 07 thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for felicitations on his election to the top political office in the country. Shehbaz was administered oath by President Arif Alvi at the Aiwan-i-Sadr in Islamabad. Shehbaz Sharif was elected as the Prime Minister after he secured 201 votes in the National Assembly. The government formation in Pakistan has taken place after protracted talks involving PML(N), PPP and smaller parties.

The ISRO’s Chandrayaan-3 successfully touched down on the south pole of the lunar surface on Aug 23.

Nawaz Sharif recounts PM Narendra Modi and Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s visit to Pak

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has expressed intentions of normalising ties with India. While speaking to ticket aspirants of his party, Sharif called for improving ties with New Delhi. He also said that during his tenure as Prime Minister, two Indian PMs visited Pakistan. In 1999, former Indian PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee visited Pakistan just a few months before the Kargil War began. In the year 2015, PM Narendra Modi held a meeting with Nawaz in Pakistan during a surprise visit to the country. Nawaz Sharif also said that he was ousted by former military-chief of Pakistan, Pervez Musharraf for opposing Kargil War. Pakistan’s continuous attempts to infiltrate Indian territory with terrorists have been the reason for unfriendly relations. The 26/11 Mumbai Attacks left an unending outrage and pain amongst Indians. India-Pakistan ties nosedived after the abrogation of Article 370 in the year 2019.

Pakistan witnesses 79% jump in terror attacks claiming 389 lives

Pakistan, in the first half of the current year, has witnessed an alarming rise in terror and suicide attacks claiming the lives of 389 people in the nation, Dawn reported citing Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) report. In the report, the data revealed that a total of 271 attacks had taken place in Pakistan during the period under review, which took 389 lives and injured 656 others. Last year, in the same period, Pakistan witnessed 151 attacks, causing 293 deaths and 487 injuries. The figures depict a staggering 79 per cent increase in attacks during the first half of 2023 compared to the corresponding period last year. The alarming figures indicate the situation in Pakistan, which has been accused of harbouring terror. Notably, India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar took a swipe at Islamabad months ago by recalling Hillary Clinton's advice. Responding to Pakistan’s Minister of State Foreign Affairs Hina Rabbani, EAM Jaishankar said, “Snakes in your backyard, you can’t expect them to bite only neighbours, eventually they will bite the people who keep them in the backyard.” He also said that Pakistan was “not great at taking good advice”.

Odisha train accident: World leaders condole loss of lives, extend support

The horrifying train collision in Odisha that left more than 250 dead and over 900 injured has sent shockwaves across the world. Condolences for the loss of lives poured in from all around the world. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau, Japanese PM Fumio Kishida, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, UK PM Rishi Sunak and UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly expressed their grief over the accident and extended support to India. The triple-train accident involved Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, the Coromandel Express and a goods train. Months after Delhi issued a notification to Pakistan for modification of the Indus Waters Treat, Pakistan has finally responded to India’s notice seeking an amendment to the bilateral agreement that was signed in September 1960. According to MEA, Pakistan Foreign Ministry has forwarded a letter that was written by Pakistan's Indus Water Commissioner to its Indian counterpart. Citing Islamabad’s "intransigence" in handling disputes, India said that it will "examine the letter and consult the stakeholders."
