Blame it on those blistering sixes. Those swift boundaries and perfectly pitched singles. If it wasn't for the continued batting lessons he continues to impart free of cost on millions of TV sets across India, we would probably have let Sachin Tendulkar take time off to recuperate. We would have waited in the wings, calmly, until his next televised walk to the centre of a field.
But, coming up soon after the Indian Premier League is something far more important than the Mumbai Indians u2014 the T20 World Cup. And it's a battle India will have to take on without the presence of Tendulkar.
Here's what we know. Of the squad recently selected for the WC in the West Indies next month, around 35 per cent have the disadvantage of being in some state of injury. Now, juxtapose that dismal piece of information with the Master Blaster's recent form. See what we mean?
From what we've seen so far, 2010 has definitely been the Year of Tendulkar. Apart from a recent astounding double-century, he has hit four half-centuries in six IPL matches. As the second-highest run scorer in the IPL, his presence would have made a huge difference to the quirky Caribbean wicket. Add to that his experience, capability and talent in the face of any bowling attack, and one can understand why a billion Indians would like him to reconsider his decision to stay away from the World Cup.
All we're asking is why our cricket demigod has opted for the lucrative IPL over a tournament far more prestigious for the country.
Captain Dhoni has asked us all to respect Tendulkar's decision, while team mate Harbhajan Singh has tried to persuade the Master Blaster and failed. Sachin decided to stay away from the yearly ICC carnival in 2007, and hasn't changed his mind. Is his decision the right one?
