IPL 2026: RCB to back 'one of the top T20 batters in the world' Phil Salt

Royal Challengers Bengaluru's director of cricket, Mo Bobat, has backed Phil Salt to have a successful season at the IPL. The Englishman is currently out of form after a poor World Cup with England.Salt played a significant role in RCB's maiden IPL triumph, scoring 403 runs in 13 innings at an average of 33.58. However, the opener's form since then has been a concern as he only scored 130 runs in eight matches at an average of 16.25 at the recent T20 World Cup in India.Speaking to the media before the start of the IPL, Mo Bobat openly backed Salt and emphasised that Salt remains one of the top-ranked T20 batters in the world. Phil Salt is ranked at number four in the ICC Men's T20I rankings."Well, those aren't concerns for me. We've got a high-quality squad, and as we saw last year, our strongest team that we put out most of the time is full of predominantly guys who are playing or have played international cricket. So, these guys are seasoned professionals. They know what they're doing. Someone like Phil Salt is still ranked in one of the top T20 batters in the world," Mo Bobat said."I'm looking forward to watching him and Virat walk out to bat like they do. Couple of gladiators walking out, which is always exciting. And they'll be trying to put the opposition under pressure," he added. Phil Salt enjoys batting with Virat Kohli: Mo Bobat Mo Bobat said that Phil Salt enjoyed batting with Virat Kohli. The RCB's opening pair were at their best during last season, guiding the franchise to its first-ever IPL title."So there's enough depth of confidence there. He also really enjoys being with RCB. He enjoys the franchise. He enjoys his partnership with Virat. He works very well with the likes of Andy and DK. So they're doing some really good work right now. And I'm pretty sure we'll see at the start of the season Phil doing his thing," Mo Bobat said.Defending champions RCB will kick off their title defence against Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 28 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.(With ANI Input)

IPL 2026: Delhi Capitals' Ben Duckett pulls out of the tournament

Ben Duckett has decided to pull out of his IPL 2026 stint with Delhi Capitals, and the England opener now faces a two-year ban from the league and auction as per the amended rules. Duckett was roped in by the Capitals for Rs 2 crore in last year's auction, but he now wants to spend time at home and play red-ball cricket, following a forgettable run in the Ashes and being on the sidelines for the recent T20 World Cup. "It was a very difficult decision, and I want to apologise to everyone at Delhi that I won't be coming," Duckett told Telegraph Sport. "I felt it was going to be a great opportunity when I put myself in the auction, and for a franchise like Delhi to pick me up was amazing. I was buzzing. It's the best competition in the world with the best players, and would have been an amazing experience," he added. As per the rules tweaked ahead of IPL 2025, overseas players who pull out of the league after being picked in the auction will face a two-year ban if they do not have a legitimate reason for doing so. The only exception, as per the IPL Governing Council, is for any injury or a medical condition which needs to be confirmed by the player's home board. "I don't know if I'm potentially saying goodbye to the IPL, having never played in it. With the age I am now (31), it might be tough for me, but I hope one day I'm able to represent Delhi. But I've thought a lot about this, and know it's the right decision for my career," Duckett said. The left-handed opener featured in all the five Ashes Tests but endured a poor run, scoring 202 runs in 10 outings at 20.20 without even a fifty. Duckett said, "I've made this decision on my own accord. I've spent a lot of time away from home in different places, and it felt like the best thing for me to do to be ready to play for England is to be here right now, at home, refreshing my mind and body. "We all have different journeys, but my journey into the Test team has come from County cricket. I know how valuable that is for me, scoring runs in the Championship and the confidence that gives me going into the rest of the summer." Duckett he did not want to rush back to England's Test season, beginning in June. "I could have gone to the IPL, spent time on the sidelines, then rushed back into the Test summer. I wouldn't have time to process the winter (Ashes), learn from mistakes, and go back to the drawing board with Notts," added Duckett, who will be working with Nottinghamshire head coach Peter Moores. On his part, Duckett apologised for the excessive drinking incident in Noosa during a mid-Ashes break. "I am sorry for that incident, it was not professional and shouldn't have happened. There is no hiding away from it," he said. "My expectations were more (runs) than what I managed (in Ashes), but facing Starc with the new ball at 90mph every innings, was extremely tough work. No one is more frustrated with how I went than me," Duckett said. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Former champions Rajasthan Royals to be sold for USD 1.63 bn

IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals is set to be sold to US-based Kal Somani-led consortium for USD 1.63 billion (approx Rs 15,290 crore), marking a colossal hike in valuation for the outfit which was the least expensive among the original eight teams of the glitzy T20 league. The Somani-led consortium includes Rob Walton from the Walmart family and Hamp family (Ford motor company). Somani is an Arizona-based tech entrepreneur who has founded IntraEdge (technology services and solutions), Truyo.Ai (data privacy rights and AI governance) and Academian (edtech services). The other contenders to buy the team, which won the inaugural trophy in 2008, were the Times Internet-led consortium, the Aditya Birla Group and the Mittal family led by ArcelorMittal CEO Aditya Mittal. The sale of Rajasthan Royals is subject to approval from the BCCI and will come into effect after the 2026 edition. British-Indian Manoj Badale held a 65 per cent stake in the franchise, which was originally sold for USD 67 million in 2008 to his company Emerging Media. "Kal is an existing investor in the franchise. The deal is subject to approval from the BCCI and will be signed soon. The price of USD 1.63 billion reflects how far the IPL has come as a brand," a well-placed source told PTI. "If you look at the sale of the latest IPL entrants Lucknow Super Giants, it is way more than that. It just shows remarkable growth of the league," shared another source drawing a comparison with sale of LSG to RPSG Group for little over Rs 7,000 crore back in 2021. "I expect the deal to be announced in the next four to five days," he added. Another major IPL franchise, defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru, is also up for sale and the value of that deal is likely to cross USD 2 billion. Somani is a co-owner of the Motor City Golf Club, a Detroit-based golf team set to join Tomorrow's Golf League (TGL) in 2027, which has been co-founded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy in partnership with the PGA Tour. Somani is also said to be an early investor in the TGL. The 81-year-old Rob, who is the eldest son of Walmart founder Sam Walton, had served as the company's chairman from 1999 to 2015. In 2022, he led an ownership group consisting of his daughter Carrie Waltor Penner and her husband Greg Penner which brought the National Football League (NFL) team Denver Broncos for a record price of USD 4.65 billion. Walton also owns a 10 per cent stake in Major League Baseball team Arizona Diamonbacks. The Hamp family is led by Sheila Ford Hamp, who is the principal owner and chairperson of the NFL side Detroit Lions. She is related to both the Ford (Ford Motor Company) and the Firestone families (Firestone Tire and Rubber Company). "It's great news for the IPL, mind-blowing numbers," said Indian cricket great Sourav Ganguly, who has also served as BCCI President besides being involved in the IPL as a mentor. The announcement also concluded the strategic review of RCSPL that was initiated by USL on November 5, 2025. Commenting on the transaction, Praveen Someshwar, MD & CEO, USL, said: "This transaction marks an important milestone for USL as we sharpen focus on our core beverage alcohol business to unlock its true potential. RCB has grown into the most prominent and commercially successful franchise in the IPL and WPL. "We are excited for the future of RCB under the stewardship of the new owner. As per the sale agreement, Aryaman Vikram Birla, ABG's director, will be the chairman of RCB while Satyan Gajwani of Times of India will be his deputy. Aryaman Birla, said: "It is a privilege to come together in this partnership to shape the next phase of growth for RCB. This partnership brings together a deep understanding of sports, media and consumer businesses. "Together, we will continue to Play Bold -- on the pitch, in the community, and for the fans who make RCB what it is." Gajwani, Chairman, Times Internet Limited, said: "RCB is the reigning champion and the most popular brand in the IPL. We will build RCB into a global sporting institution, while remaining rooted in Bengaluru and Karnataka and its incredible fanbase." Blitzer hoped to build on RCB's recent success. "RCB has a world-class fanbase, and the IPL is one of the great growth stories in global sport. Having invested in clubs and leagues around the world, I believe the opportunity at RCB stands out. We look forward to working alongside our partners and the BCCI to build on the franchise's championship success," he said. Patel praised the RCB as one of the strongest sporting brands in the world. "We are excited to invest in RCB, building on Blackstone's long-standing commitment to India. RCB stands out as one of the most popular sports franchises in the world with a powerful brand, a loyal fan base, and multiple avenues for growth," he added. However, formalities such as ratification from the BCCI, IPL Governing Council, its WPL counterpart and the Competition Commission of India are still pending. Earlier, IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals was acquired by US-based Kal Somani-led consortium for USD 1.63 billion (approx Rs 15,290 crore), The Somani-led consortium includes Rob Walton from the Walmart family and Hamp family (Ford motor company). Shubhaarambh! GT host an event to begin their IPL journey

Gujarat Titans marked the beginning of their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 journey with Shubharambh 2026, a landmark evening in Ahmedabad that brought together the full squad, franchise owners, partners, and fans. Ranji stars ready to rock! 6 Mumbai player who could take the IPL by storm

Suryakumar Yadav35 yrs, Mumbai Indians Suryakumar Yadav. Pic/AFP India's 2026 T20 World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar is known to be a 360-degree batter for his hard-hitting skills and innovative shots all around the ground. The highly experienced MI batter has 6462 runs under his belt in 214 IPL games. Despite winning the T20 World Cup recently, Suryakumar managed to score just 242 runs in nine games in the tournament. So, the Mumbai boy, who scored 165 runs in five Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy matches last season, has a point to prove in IPL-19. When it comes to the IPL, he has always showcased his match-winning abilities. In last year’s IPL, he scored 717 runs in 16 matches at an impressive strike rate of 167.92 with five half-centuries. Rohit Sharma38 yrs, Mumbai Indians Rohit Sharma. Pic/Rohit’s Instagram India's 2024 T20 World Cup-winning captain and MI’s five-time IPL-winning skipper Rohit Sharma is currently playing only ODIs for the country. However, Rohit, who is looking much fitter now, has been frenquently seen practising at Mumbai Cricket Association’s BKC ground and on Mumbai’s maidans too. Last December, Rohit played two Vijay Hazare Trophy (50-over tournament) games in Jaipur, where he smashed a 94-ball 155 against Sikkim, before being dismissed for a duck versus Uttarakhand. His last three ODI matches were against New Zealand in January, where he scored 26, 24 and 11 at Vadodara, Rajkot and Indore respectively. Though Rohit mainly was an Impact Player in IPL-18 (scored 418 runs in 15 games), MI skipper Hardik Pandya may use his on-field experience in a bid to win their sixth IPL trophy.   Yashasvi Jaiswal 24 yrs, Rajasthan Royals Yashasvi Jaiswal. Pic/RR’s Instagram India's Test opener has proved his batting ability in the shortest format, but he still failed to make India’s T20 World Cup squad recently. The left-hander now has another opportunity to prove his talent when he opens the innings for RR. Jaiswal’s last three IPL seasons, in which he has scored 625, 435 and 559 respectively, helped RR immensely, and this time too, head coach Kumar Sangakkara will be expecting something similar, especially since RR’s experienced opener Sanju Samson has been traded to Chennai Super Kings.  Shivam Dube 32 yrs, Chennai Super Kings Shivam Dube. Pic/CKS's Instagram The India all-rounder will be playing in his eighth IPL. The attacking left-hander, famous for his big-hitting skills, played a crucial role when CSK won their last IPL title in 2023, scoring 418 runs. Though he scored just 235 runs in nine games during India’s T20 World Cup win recently, his short, but timely knocks were very crucial. Besides, his effective right-arm medium pace bowling gives CSK the advantage of an additional bowler in the playing XI.  Ayush Mhatre 18 yrs, Chennai Super Kings Ayush Mhatre. Pic/CSK’s Instagram India U-19 World Cup-winning skipper Ayush Mhatre will be very keen to make it count in IPL-19 after he managed just 214 runs in seven U-19 World Cup matches in Zimbabwe last month. However, his IPL-18 outing was impressive. The attacking opener played just seven matches, but scored 240 runs at a brilliant strike-rate of 188.98. Sarfaraz Khan 28 yrs, Chennai Super Kings Sarfaraz Khan. Pic/CSK’s Instagram India Test batter Sarfaraz Khan has scored 371 runs in six matches with one century. He’s a consistent middle-order batter in red-ball cricket, having scored 5114 runs in 62 first-class games. However, recently, Sarfaraz emphasised that he’s keen to play white-ball cricket for India, meaning he will be looking to fulfil his ambition with a good show at IPL-19.

Sourav Ganguly speaks about 'Impact Player' rule in the league

The IPL 2026 is all set to kick off from March 28. So far, the schedule of only first 20 matches has been released due to state elections. Ahead of the cash-rich league, former Team India cricketer Sourav Ganguly said that the 'Impact Player' rule in the tournament will continue to stay. "Impact player rule I think it's going to stay, and when I was the president of BCCI it had already come in. So, this is here to stay, someone will like it someone will not," he said. Despite the hype of T20 cricket in the world, the former cricketer chose Test as the superior format of the game. He also said that T20 cricket is least challenging and countries such as India, England, Australia, and South Africa, the red-ball cricket will always be special. "I think Test cricket is the real format because one has to bowl 20-25 overs in one day, bowling four overs in a T20 match is a lot easy. T20 cricket is least challenging in terms of quality. But T20 cricket is the format which brings in people, it's just for three hours in the evening full of sixes and fours," said Ganguly. "But in countries like India, England, Australia and South Africa Test cricket will always be special and when you see young players want to play Test cricket, it proves Test cricket is the strongest format of the game," he added. He also hailed the Indian Premier League (IPL) by saying that it will continue to reach greater heights. "IPL will only go to greater heights. This is phenomenal and it also goes to show the game is expanding as the game is going to America, onto that part of the world is fantastic. It's mind-blowing numbers but there is lot's more in store for Indian cricket and I am looking forward to it," said the 53-year-old former cricketer. IPL 2026, Opening match: Date and venue The first match of the tournament is scheduled to be played between the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Earlier, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) Secretary, Santosh Menon, confirmed that the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium will host five of the RCB's IPL 2026 home games. The venue will also host one of the play-off matches and the title clash of the tournament.
