The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday unveiled the 15-member Indian squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, with Shubman Gill making a comeback to the T20I setup as vice-captain. The announcement, delayed due to heavy rains in Mumbai disrupting flight schedules, followed a crucial selection meeting held at the BCCI headquarters.

The selection panel, headed by Chairman Ajit Agarkar, convened alongside T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav and BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia, finalising the squad ahead of the tournament, which will be played in Dubai and Abu Dhabi from September 9 to 28.

Among the key inclusions is Jasprit Bumrah, India’s ace fast bowler, whose presence bolsters the pace attack significantly. However, the absence of Yashasvi Jaiswal, who had an outstanding Test season and was speculated to feature as a backup opener, raised several eyebrows. Despite his red-ball success, the young left-hander has been relegated to the standby list.

More surprising was the exclusion of Shreyas Iyer, who has been in fine form across two consecutive IPL seasons, both as a reliable batter and as a successful leader. In a notable development, Iyer not only missed out on the main squad but was also left out of the standby list.

The five players named as standbys are: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Washington Sundar, Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel, and Prasidh Krishna. This reserve group offers depth across departments, but the absence of Iyer among them further underlines the selection committee’s bold choices aimed at long-term planning and format-specific roles.

The squad announcement was initially scheduled to be revealed at 1:30 PM, but persistent monsoon showers in Mumbai caused travel delays, notably impacting Saikia’s arrival. The press conference eventually commenced at 2:45 PM, where Ajit Agarkar and Suryakumar Yadav addressed the media to shed light on the squad composition and the decision-making process.

With the group stage fixtures fast approaching, India is placed in Group A alongside Pakistan, UAE, and Oman. They begin their campaign against the UAE on September 10, followed by the high-profile encounter against Pakistan on September 14, both in Dubai.

Team India's squad for the Asia Cup 2025: Suryakumar Yadav (C), Shubman Gill (VC), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma (WK), Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Sanju Samson (WK), Harshit Rana, Rinku Singh
