India vice-captain Ganga Kadam with the Blind Women’s T20 World Cup trophy on Sunday
Maharashtra girl Ganga Kadam sports jersey number 007 in the Indian women’s blind T20 team, and just like the world famous spy James Bond, she has this unique tendency to spring a surprise against the opposition; be it with a sharp throw from the outfield, some tight bowling or a match-winning knock.
On Sunday, India won the Blind Women’s T20 World Cup, beating Nepal by seven wickets in the final at the P Sara Oval here. Earlier, in the semi-finals, Ganga scored a brilliant 31-ball 41 as India beat Australia by nine wickets.
‘A special feeling’
“When the Indian women’s team won the ICC World Cup final at the DY Patil Stadium on November 2, we decided that we will win the next world title for our country. This truly is a special feeling. Now we know the significance of being a world champion,” Ganga, who originally hails from Solapur, but is pursuing her Masters in Social Work at Kirti College in Dadar, told mid-day moments after the final win.
Backed by ODI champs
Interestingly, members of that victorious ODI World Cup team were constantly encouraging Ganga and her team to do well in Sri Lanka. “The Indian women’s cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues were continuously in touch with us during this tournament and encouraged us to do well. We are so proud to have lived up to their expectations and won a World Cup just like them. It feels great to have raised the Indian tricolour in a foreign land,” added Ganga, who is a huge Mahendra Singh Dhoni fan.
“We developed a great bond among teammates and that is the secret to our success against a tough Nepal team in the final. Even in the semi-finals, we did it quite easily against Australia. We are very grateful to [GK] Mahatesh sir [Chairman of the Cricket Association of the Blind], who has always treated us like family,” concluded Ganga, who has eight sisters and a brother back home in Solapur.
