A win will propel Mumbai to the top of the table while Goa, currently languishing in 7th place, could take a big step towards clinching a semi-final qualifying spot. Despite Mumbai only eking out goalless draws in their last two games, assistant coach Steve Darby remained unperturbed.
Real football
“Nil-nil draws are a sign of a mature league. We would like to score many goals but this is real football,” Darby told reporters yesterday before adding, “We haven’t missed many chances in our games but we haven’t created too many either.”
The Goa franchise, on the other hand, have been guilty of squandering too many chances — they scored just five goals in the first seven matches before their 4-1 rout over Delhi Dynamos in their last match.
Not so worried: Zico
Goa coach Zico, however, said he would be more concerned had his team not been creating goal-scoring opportunities. “Maybe the players were reckless or they were under pressure to win games, but we didn’t score a lot. But if we weren’t creating opportunities, I would be worried.
“In the the second phase of the competition, it will be a little complicated for us as the Top Four teams will play more defensively. My philosophy is always to go for the win.” Except for marquee man Freddie Ljungberg, Mumbai will have a full squad available today.
