Former national champion Harinder Pal Sandhu sprang a surprise in the inaugural $35,000 Vedanta Indian Squash Open yesterday by ousting Englishman Nathan Lake of England 3-1 at the NSCI courts. Sandhu, ranked 49th in the world, beat his 53rd ranked opponent 11-7, 12-10, 5-11, 11-8.
Earlier, top seed and India No. 1 Saurav Ghosal got off to a splendid start with a comfortable 3-0 win over Egyptian qualifier Karim El Hammamy. Ghosal won 11-3, 1 1-4, 11-6.
