Sinner advances to 3rd Miami semifinal in 4 years

Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner won his 20th match of 2024 to reach the Miami Open semifinals for the third time in the past four years with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Tomas Machac on Wednesday. Sinner, seeded second, will take on No. 3 seed Daniil Medvedev in a rematch of last year's Miami Open final. Medvedev won that, but has lost four straight matchups since. Medvedev advanced to the latest meeting with a 6-2, 7-6 (7) win over No. 22 seed Nicolas Jarry in a late match. Sinner reached his fourth final four of the season and moved to 20-1 overall. He reached the finals of this event in 2021 and 2023, losing both times. It was a really tough match, but I was happy about the performance, Sinner said. Sinner, 22, said Machac served well early on and his aggressiveness kept things close for a while. But Sinner continued his fabulous run, breaking his opponent's serve four times, to move on to the next round. "But it has to start off in a practice session when you don't feel well, but you still have to practice and this can make the difference. At the moment, I feel really good on the court, he continued. On the women's side, 14th-seeded Ekaterina Alexandrova followed up her win over No. 1 seed Iga Swiatek with another top-10 victory, taking down No. 5 seed Jessica Pegula 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Alexandrova earned her first trip to a Miami Open semifinal. I think it's like the biggest achievement for me today on this court, and semifinal is a big bonus, Alexandrova said.Alexandrova will face Danielle Collins, who defeated No. 23 seed Caroline Garcia 6-3, 6-2. Collins will play in the Miami semifinal round on Thursday for the first time since she made it as a qualifier six years ago. Garcia had come off consecutive wins over Grand Slam champions Naomi Osaki and Coco Gauff. But the run fizzled out against Collins, who has won 10 of 11 sets in this tournament and needed just 80 minutes to advance. Collins moved to 4-0 in her career against Garcia, who never had a break point in the match. Collins downplayed the dominant showing. Against someone like Caro, it forces me to be more concentrated, because I know I don't want to give her an inch," Collins said. Shooter 'apologises' for leaving camp without informing, included in Oly trials

A pistol shooter, who left the preparatory camp for the Asia Olympic Qualifiers in December last year without informing the national federation, has been selected for the Paris Olympic qualifiers after apologising for his disciplinary breach. The trials will be held in Delhi and Bhopal in April and May respectively. Bhavesh Shekhawat, who competes in 25m rapid-fire event, left the camp on December 29 and was incommunicado till January 4 this year, forcing the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) to replace him in the squad for the Paris Olympic qualifiers in Jakarta. NRAI secretary Rajiv Bhatia told PTI on Wednesday that the marksman from Rajasthan has "apologised" for his misdemeanour, paving the way for him to compete in the trials and stake claim for a Paris Olympics berth. "Yes, he came to us (after leaving). He came with his father and apologised, so we have closed the matter. It was a personal matter," Bhatia said. "He is a good shooter and whatever is happening in his personal life, we are not concerned. His father also furnished the relevant documents and the matter was resolved," he added refusing to get into the specifics of the issues that Shekhawat was dealing with at that time. Also Read: Thrice as nice for Max Bhatia, when asked if the matter was brought to the notice of the NRAI's Athletes' Commission, replied in the negative. "The incident happened during the (national) camp at the Karni Singh Ranges. He came back and apologised. We cannot hang the person," he added. But he conceded that the shooter should have informed the federation about the circumstances which forced him to leave. "Yes, he is there in the Olympic selection trial. If there is something against him, the law will take its course. But if I deprive him today, and tomorrow if he gets cleared... and suppose the case is pending in the court... I have no idea what the case is. "Who does what in his personal life, I am not concerned, unless of course the court says that he should not be allowed to play," he reasoned. Bhatia said the shooter has already been penalised by the federation. "We had issued a warning (when he went missing from the camp) and we didn't allow him to go abroad in one of the competitions after the Jakarta event. What bigger penalty should we impose on him?" he asked. A series of four trials will be held in Delhi (April 18-27) and Bhopal (May 10-19) to select the team for the Paris Olympics.
