Formula One championship leader Oscar Piastri put McLaren at the top of the timesheets in Friday’s second practice session ahead of this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix.
The Australian, who heads team mate Lando Norris by 25 points in the overall standings, lapped the 4.9-km long floodlit Marina Bay street track in one minute, 30.714 seconds. Racing Bulls driver Isack Hadjar was a surprise second, finishing 0.132 seconds off the pace with Max Verstappen third for Red Bull, 0.143 seconds adrift of Piastri.
Norris was nearly half a second off his team mate and title rival’s pace in fifth behind Aston Martin veteran Fernando Alonso who ended a strong day in fourth after having topped the first of the two Friday practice sessions.
McLaren head into Sunday’s race looking all but certain to clinch a second constructors’ title in a row, which would mark their first back-to-back championship success since Mika Hakkinen clinched successive drivers’s titles in 1998 and 1999. It would also be their first consecutive constructors’s title triumph since their four-season spell of dominance spanning 1988 to 1991.
The Woking-based team, winners of 12 races this year, need just 13 points to seal the deal on Sunday. Lance Stroll ended the day sixth fastest for Aston Martin ahead of Haas driver Esteban Ocon and Williams driver Carlos Sainz. Charles Leclerc was ninth for Ferrari with his teammate, Lewis Hamilton, mourning the death of his pet dog Roscoe, completing the top-10.
