Kabul: An Afghan lawmaker was killed and 11 others were wounded in a bomb attack in Kabul, an Interior Ministry spokesman has said.

"A member of the Lower House of Afghanistan's parliament, Shir Wali Wardak, martyred as a result of an explosion in Kabul this evening," spokesman Sediq Sediqqi tweeted on Sunday, Xinhua news agency reported.

The blast occurred near Wardak's house in Kabul's Qambar Square area.

An investigation was launched and more information will be released later, Sediqqi said.

The killed parliamentarian was the brother of Farooq Wardak, a former minister of education and well-known politician.

The Taliban militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
