Former deputy chief minister of Maharashtra and NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal's starry tantrums refuse to abate. Ever since his arrest in March last year, the senior politician has been making one demand after another, citing health issues.

His most recent demand was for a private ambulance to aid his commute from Arthur Road Jail -- where he is currently lodged for his role in a multi-crore money laundering case --  to the court.

The demand came after jail officials brought Bhujbal late for a sessions court hearing last afternoon. When the court asked for an explanation, the officials cited the unavailability of an ambulance. The senior leader had been provided with an ambulance after he was diagnosed with heart disease. Bhujbal's lawyer Sajal Yadav then told the court that they were willing to engage a private ambulance and pay for it to avoid such a situation in the future. The court has asked Yadav to file an application before the jail officials.

This request comes just a few days after Bhujbal was given permission to vote for the presidential election. At the time, Bhujbal, who is also a Lok Sabha MP, had told the court that he had the constitutional right to cast his vote.

Bhujbal, who is undoubtedly one of Arthur Road Jail's most high-profile prisoners, has sought court intervention on several occasions.

Barely a month after his arrest last year, he had complained of toothache, after which he was taken to theGovernmentDentalCollege. In September, he received another order from the court, and was sent to JJ Hospital after he complained of fever. He was discharged only in the second week of October, but was detected with a heart condition. He was then referred toBombayHospitalfor another test, where he stayed for almost a month.

During this time, activist and former Aam Aadmi Party member Anjali Damania had filed an intervention application before the court, claiming that Bhujbal had misused the court's order and was relaxing at a private hospital. Damania had also alleged that Bhujbal and his nephew Sameer Bhujbal were getting several facilities in the prison.

In March, right after his arrest, the leader had requested the court to grant him four days' parole to spend Holi with his family. The court, however, rejected the application.
