Tear into the Big Nachos Wall to drench your palate with cheese and beans at New Yorker Wave, yet another place for vegetarians to binge at Girgaum Chowpatty

The square metal tacks on the massive entrance door should've warned us. But we paid no heed, walking into New Wave only to encounter dazzling light (it was 8 pm) and a full-length mirror making the two-storey restaurant seem bigger than what it really is. We were considering fishing out our sunglasses as we made our way to the upper level and settled in, even as the staff seemed more interested in the IPL match than the patrons.

The NW special pizza

New Wave (spot it by its NW logou00a0on the signboard rather than the long-form) takes inspiration from its largely successful neighbours -- New Yorker and Cream Centreu00a0-- by including everything from Italian, Mexican and Chinese to Indian cuisine (Jain items too, mind you) on its menu. We decided to go for one from each cuisine to do justice.

We couldn't have asked for a better start to a meal than with the Tomato Basil Coin (Rs 110)u00a0-- the creamy soup with basil-coated crumbs making us wish we had it to get us by on nasty, flu-ridden days. Starters came in the form of a crunchy Bhendi Kurkure (Rs 125) that we have only had at Gujju weddings until now and, we can say in retrospect, was a decent preparation but a bad selection.

The modest bhendi soon lost all our attention when the Big Nachos Wall (Rs 225) arrived. The cheese oozed off the crisp nachos that stood horizontally rather than get soggy in the gooey cheddar cheese sauce poured over a bed of beans. Yes, we love the way a dish is presented, and couldn't care less if it tastes the same down the road and probably even costs lesser. We had a winner alright.

Our merriment continued with the NW Special Pizza (Rs 295) that had all of our favourite toppings (pesto, olives, sundried tomatoes, roasted peppers) on a crisp, thin pizza that wasn't quite Italian enough but done just the way we like it. A little like our mamma's pizza, a little like one from a genuine Italian bistro. However, it's important to note that the pizza is too small for the price it commands.

Unfortunately, a serving of Pad Thai (Rs 210), that came next, did not back up the pizza too well. The flat noodles were too oily, worse still, too spicy to eat more than a mouthful of and just the opposite of our last dish of the dayu00a0-- the Baked Blueberry Yoghurt (Rs 55)u00a0-- a trifle too expensive for the teeny portion it came as but a delicious end to a meal. Also, it was more kharwas than yoghurt and the blueberry was just a small topping but we were definitely not complaining. We will come back for you, o nachos and yoghurt.
