WHAT's ON dropped in at two restaurants which serve authentic, lip-smacking Kolhapuri food

If you crave for some teekha fare, which will leave your eyes watering, nothing can beat the charm of an authentic Kolhapuri thali.

Shivneri Assal Kolhapuri Veg, Non-Veg

Thali at Shivneri

This eatery serves a traditional meal prepared by Kolhapuri chefs. The quality of the food and the amazing flavour are the hallmarks that are sure to bring you back to this place time and again. The décor is minimal and the walls are dotted with paintings of rural Maharashtra. Families form a major bulk of their clientele.

we recommend: Check out their delicious Mutton and Chicken Thalis (Rs 65) and the Special Thalis (Rs 80). You will be presented with a huge Thaat (as the plate is called), filled with an assortment of Mutton Curry, Mutton Sukha, Tambada Rassa (red gravy), Pandhra Rassa (white gravy), Bhakris, Biryani, Egg Masala, Taak (buttermilk) and Sol Kadhi (a concoction of kokum and coconut with a tinge of ginger-garlic paste and freshly-garnished coriander leaves). Do try the red and white gravy, as it is the specialty of this place.

At: Satara Road, opposite City Pride.
Call: 24232121.
Open on all days, from 11 am to 11 pm

Aaba Cha Dhaba

Aaba Cha Dhaba on Laxmi Road

The latest offering of the famous Purepur-Kolhapur chain, Aaba Cha Dhaba serves food in typical Kolhapuri style. It's no wonder then that if you are there on weekends, you might have to wait in queue. With a claustrophobic setting and uncomfortable seating, the place is worth a visit only for the quality and authenticity of its food. The dishes served here are not too spicy and the menu has a lot of variety.

we recommend: The bistro specialises in Akha Masoor (Rs 40), Pitla Bhakri (Rs 50), Mutton Roast (Rs 150), Chicken Roast (Rs 130) and Mutton Fry (Rs 80). Though the USP of Kolhapuri food happens to be mutton, they also offer a variety of vegetarian delicacies.

At: Laxmi Road, near Kulkarni petrol Pump.
Call: 32418877.
Open on all days, from 11.30 am to 3 pm and 7 pm to 11.30 pm

Aaba Cha Dhaba and Shivneri didn't know What's On was there. We review anonymously and pay for our meals.
