The award, which consisted of a trophy and a citation, was given at a simple ceremony on the eve of World Disability Day, December 2, at India International Centre Auditorium, Max Mueller Marg. Home Minister and chief guest for the evening, P Chidambaram presented the award to the winners. Mayuri Asar, manager CSR, Gitanjali Group, collected the award on behalf of the Gitanjali Group.
The Saksham initiative of Gitanjali Group is focused on empowering people with disabilities (PWD's) through a six month training programme and creating conditions for their rehabilitation and integration into society. Nearly 250 such people are employed at the Gitanjali gems factory at Rajiv Gems Park, Hyderabad, and the company plans to significantly increase this number in the coming year.
