Mumbai recorded 8,693 cases of rash driving in 2014 — almost twice as that in 2013. Instances of riding without helmet were nearly 2,90,000, as compared to 2,36,207 in the previous year

The statistics of various cases registered by the Mumbai Traffic police department in the year 2014 once again prove that the streets of Mumbai are unsafe. Cases such as rash driving have almost doubled as compared to 2013, while instances of no parking increased to 5,19,384 from 4,69,152 in the year 2013.

In the year 2013, 4,945 of rash driving were registered while in the following year, the number went up to 8,693. Cases of honking increased from 10,869 to 12,494. However, traffic personnel claim that the number of traffic violation cases have gone up as they have increased their presence on the streets and have managed to nab more offenders.

Dr Bhushan Kumar Upadhyay, joint commissioner of police (traffic), told sunday mid-day, “In the traffic department, we get results on the basis of the amount of hard work we put on the streets to nab traffic violators. Citizens don’t approach us as they approach cops.
In our case, we have to walk up to people and tell them that they have committed an offence.” However, there were some areas where the number of cases has decreased. While in the year 2013, 3,635 cases of speeding were registered, last year only 3,195 cases were registered. Likewise, in 2013, 3,09,982 cases of jumping signals were registered while in 2014, 3,02,367 cases were filed.
This year, the traffic police department will focus on three areas — refusal to ply, citizens not wearing helmet and pedestrian crossing. “These three areas are the major cause for high number of accidents on roads.If we manage to curb these cases, we will be able to control the accidents too,” said Upadhyay.
