Third seed refuses to use Wimbledon's pitch excuse for loss against Michelle Larcher De Brito

I should've been more aggressive: Maria Sharapova

Russian star Maria Sharapova was hurting big-time after losing to Portuguese qualifier Michelle Larcher De Brito (World No 131) at Wimbledon on Wednesday.

Talking about her heartbreaking loss, Sharapova said: “I think it was a combination of everything, I think she (Brito) played extremely well, she was really solid from the baseline. I don’t feel like I was aggressive enough in the match and that I hit the ball deep enough,” admitted the 2004 Wimbledonu00a0champion.

Sharapova fell on three occasions during the tie and that came up during her post match media briefing: “I don’t think I have ever fallen three times in a match before in my career.

That was a little strange, but that is certainly not an excuse. I have seen lot of players fall and take a few hits and a few injuries today so I think that’s just part of the game.”

After playing a solid first round, she experienced a jolt in the second. “It’s frustrating. You certainly don’t want to lose matches whether it’s early or late. This tournament is extremely special and its definitely tough to lose, but I am going to keep my head high because there’s no other way,” said Sharapova.u00a0
